The last decent player we got off you was Andy Cole over 20 years ago.

Since then we've given you stalwarts like Gillespsie, Smith, Butt, Simpson and Obertan who made 500+ appearances combined for you.

You owe us a good one.

and a past-it ronnie johnsen

At Brescia, AC Milan and Italy he doesn't play as DM... that said, Tonali, Dimarco, and Donnarumma (and partly Calafiori) are the only talents we have. The rest of the team is horrible and is also led by a coach who isn't exactly the best.

Barella was God two years ago, today he's a ghost... and even Bastoni is in decline.

Yesterday I watched the game at home with three friends and at halftime, for fun, we looked at the Italian national team rosters from 1982 to today... it was disheartening to see what a team we had in 1982, 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002. It's unreal that we won in 2006 with a team whose good players had already given their best years before.

From 2010 to today ALL the Italian national teams have been awful.

Thanks for that, although it doesn't really answer the question.

I guess what you are saying is that by your current standards he's a very accomplished footballer. Interestingly, I don't really think his natural position is DM either. He looks more suited to an all action midfielder who can attack the box and unleash that right foot. I suppose the question marks would be over his on ball technique which is below someone like Bruno Guimeres for example.

Sorry, I'll try to answer you better... will an Italian in 2045 remember Tonali? No... we'll remember Totti, Maldini, Pirlo, etc..these are players who could play for any team and in any era.

Tonali isn't and never will be part of this group, but in an era lacking in real talents and in which Haaland is considered a great striker, then Tonali could also be considered an important player for many teams.

Yes, but here we enter the realm of personal and subjective preferences regarding the qualities of a good midfielder... an example: for age reasons (I'm 57 years old) I was fortunate enough to witness the best period of Italian football first and European football afterward; do you know who is absolutely the best midfielder I've ever seen and light years away from all the others? Lothar Matthäus... he didn't have the superfine technique of a Xavi or many others but he was simply an UNSTOPPABLE CM.

Was he technically a beast? Not at all but if I had to clone someone between Iniesta, Xavi, Pirlo, or Zidane too, I have no doubts about choosing the German.

Do any teams play with a sitting midfielder now?

Guess it’s difficult if you value pressing high up the field. Probably easier if you dominate possession like with Rodri.

Not since this fella.

They've almost got this crazy record of winning every 24 years

Interesting Geordie Journos video just gone up on their Youtube channel.

Liam Kennedy doubles down on his Tonali gentleman's agreement story and takes a swipe at other journos (Luke Edwards, without naming him) being used as 'pawns' by the club to try and discredit stories that he knows are true.

Think it's pretty obvious Luke Edwards is just a club mouthpiece and nothing he writes is worth the paper it's written on, but interesting to see another journo basically say the same.

Worrying that they seem to think what Tonali thinks and the club thinks could be different with regards said agreement.

Liam Kennedy is utterly clueless himself tbh. Knows about as much as we do.

I’d back Edwards over him every day of the week, and that’s saying something!

Seems to be one of the few Journos that doesn’t have an agenda and speaks the truth. The others like Edward’s and Hope seem very snakey.
