NUFC Transfer Rumours

Recommended Posts

We need a CDM when playing against the citys, arsenal and liverpools of this world. Possession based teams who are high class at exploiting the space between the lines in the final third. Foden ran riot last weekend. A CDM option would help us nulify that whilst also giving us more protection when protecting leads later in games against other opposition.

Thuram seems to have been left alone this window which is a bit strange as you would think he would be a default choice for Liverpool after the Caicedo/Lavia collapses.

Wonder if his personal references were poor, as most teams seem to be more than okay with scooping up players before they are fully ready - Hojlund, Lavia etc.

Guess it goes on the pile with the Jonathan David transfer that never happens.

Todibo has also been left alone at this point, think it’s got more to do with Nice being backed by Ineos and being tough sellers.

Though according to French media he could be heading to Man U shortly, might help that Ratcliffe is a Manc though and trying to buy them.

I think it would be harsh bringing a DM in and just keeping him for those games as he’s clearly set out what he has in mind with what he’s got. I think it’s more about utilising what we do have and using possibly a defender for that role if needed. Then it’s who do you sacrifice and who do you play at the back.

   Barnes Wilson Murphy

      Tonali           Bruno

              Botman

Hall Burn         Schar Trips

                Pope

Was it Park who Fergie used to play for only the big games and when he wanted a player marked out of the game?

I think that's a good point, Winston, though as Georgie Boyo, says, you can scarcely have a DM who only gets played against the good sides. I wouldn't agree with him though about the viability of using any of our defenders in that role.

The problem with a specialist DM is that they tend to get a lot of possession, and if they're not able to use it well, then you lose a lot of attacking opportunities. The compromise we have at the moment is Bruno, who's good on the ball but not great defensively.

So really you want a midfielder who's good at both attacking and defensive roles. They're thin on the ground, cost a lot of money potentially and get snapped up by the wealthier clubs (eg Caicedo, Lavia, Rodri, MacAllister) Hopefully, in time, we're able to sort that.

We could try Tonali in that role, and I think that's what most of us were expecting when he signed, with Bruno being pushed further forward. What I think Eddie is doing at the moment is dividing those roles between them. This takes some co-ordination, and we'll have to see how it develops. Meantime, it doesn't solve the problem that you raised intially, about the problem of having to nullify a Foden (or maybe a Maddison )

Yeah it was. He said after the defeat to Barcelona in the champions league final he should have started park and got him to man mark Messi and he believes they would have won.

We definitely need a solution for those half spaces. Could be tactical rather than personnel.

City have a DM. But they often defend in a 442. Just blocks out a lot of space.  We defended in a 442 first half against Villa.  Compact too with Miggy at RW and narrow.  I think that helped. A 4141 would also plug those gaps but that negates a counter attack though.

Different times and different players... But everyone told Keegan he needed to be stronger in defence and brought in Batty.

I loved him as a player but I do wonder if buying a stronger CB then peacock and leaving the midfield as is, would have been the better option?

Much as dropping in a fixed CDM now might limit us in other aspects of our gameplay.

Think we'd obviously benefit in some ways from someone who has the qualities of a traditional DM but won't want to sacrifice the on the ball qualities that we get from having someone like Bruno there. Not sure it would be a net gain.

Ideally someone who offers a nice blend of both will come along at some point, but it's very far down the list of improvements needed.

Remember, Philips knocked us back at the start of the window, it deffo looked like we were looking for a dynamic holding midfielder so that we could Bruno further upfield...

Did he? I can see why we'd be interested.

I think we’d potentially play that a number of ways -

1) you sign a young player that still is developing and comes in situationally, rotates etc.

2) you sign an older one with experience in Europe, who is OK with a limited role

3) you sign an elite DM but realize that means our 8s are Bruno and Sandro and that further pushes Joelinton, Willock, Longstaff, Anderson and Miley to some extent down the order.

while all are conceivable I really haven’t a clue how we will do it long term, but I trust the recruitment team so much that I don’t even care what direction they go. Howe always seems to be for evolution and change year over year and Ashworth seems to be very meticulous in his succession planning (by evidence of this summer)

Aye. It seems Howe wants three all rounders in there. Can already see what we're trying to do with them interchanging and one sitting deep while the other bomb on. The variations in their style means they all offer something slightly different in the final third too.

In a nutshell.
