Watching Dubravka and Karius in nets for the next five months could cost us a lot of points. Who is more likely to win you more points - a first rate goalkeeper or a third choice centre half? Can get a better GK on loan or for a short period of time. I've said it before - signing a GK better than Pope will be difficult.

joeyt
I'll throw a name into the mix because he was available on loan last season but what about Keylor Navas? Edited December 12, 2023 by joeyt

But we’d be daft not to ensure that we’re confident with the man in nets. Far, far more important than a RW or a covering centre back.
Sima
An elite goalkeeper is the reason why we didn’t win the title in 96. It’s the core of any side that wants to be the very best.
Fezzle
Why are people just assuming Arteta will happily weaken his own team to help us in January? Makes zero sense and lets be honest hes not a huge upgrade anyway. Plus any decisions wont be made until we know the outcomes of tomorrow and next Wednesday. Our needs will be very different if things go shite and also when the 6/7 injuries clear up towards the end of this month Edited December 12, 2023 by Fezzle

It would allow them to strengthen further in other areas. Imagine if they used the money to get Osihmen for example. They signed Raya to be number 1. Arteta clearly disagrees with you based on his comments, your last line is irrelevant to be honest as you need more than one keeper anyway so he wont want to lose him. Also why would we pay a premium for someone far from an upgrade on our No1? None of this makes any sense for any party and seems completely media led rather than any actual facts

As I mentioned, we don’t know how the manager rates him and of course this is all speculation. But seriously, you don’t think Arsenal would bite someone’s hand off for say 40m? and don’t get me wrong here, I’m not advocating for this, I’m not a fan of ramsdale or side grading but I could see it happen. Club have shown in previous windows that, if they feel a long term target is available, they will make it happen somehow. I have a feeling Howe's number 1 target is Ramsdale, which I don't see happening in Jan. No way Arsenal will want to do us any favours in terms of structured payments etc. Can you really see Ramsdale being the best keeper we can identify? frankpingel
Definitely encouraged if it's without any obligation, we could do with him now but not longer term potentially. Win win.
Stottie
It depends on how close he is to Howe fit, but if he can cover the ground, I can see Kalvin Phillips being a success. Given his position and the Leeds connection, I half expect David Batty comparisons.
clintdempsey
If we do buy (not a loan or free transfer) a GK in january it will be our future no 1 IMO. It would probably have happened in the next 18 months anyway. Pope's freak injury might have brought that forward though.
