You see Barnes starting week in and week out? I like him and rate him but his limitations are quite obvious and you need to tailor your system to cover for them.

We probably need to upgrade both Schar and Pope next season if we want to push for CL.

time waits for no man.

No, but what I mean is, you’re saying Barnes is a squad player but you want a better squad player than him? He’s probably one of the best forwards in the league who isn’t playing regularly.

I agree about Schar and Pope, sure that’s already in the plans. Guehi and Botman could be our CBs come February.

Barnes is serviceable as a squad player that is a good point. If he's content with that role I've got no objections.

Guehi is good and I like him but id prefer someone is who more actually dominant as we might be a bit exposed defending set pieces having him. Fee has to come way down too.

I still don’t think we get anywhere near the best out of Isak, 2 wingers who create fuck all and no number 10 to thread him passes, this season isn’t going to help keep him as it stands.

Problem is, the game is stacked against us. The only way to keep genuine world class players is to become a world class team. We are prevented from doing this by rules specifically designed to stop us building one. The only way to get on the ladder is....to sell our world class players.

Yeah complete farce, John Gibson was saying this on a recent podcast. It’s literally the perfect set up for the top six to keep the status quo.

Good luck improving on Isak, Bruno, Tonali & Botman when your league position is going backwards. We're also never upgrading Tino, Hall, Gordon or Joelinton.

Rowe and Whittaker are both better than Murphy and Miggy.

We signed Bruno when we were in the relegation zone, and Isak and Botman after we finished bottom half.  We’re in a much better position today.

This is how Spurs did it, mind.  Berbatov, Bale, Modric etc.  Bought well and sold incredibly well.  This is what turned them into a ‘big six’ club when they hadn’t been anything of the sort for two decades.

The cherry on top being that we could only sell to the very teams we're trying to catch.

It's all utter horseshit and the principal reason for why we haven't kicked on this year. If you're not one of those teams, you make one competitively-priced mistake and you're fucked.

The pressure on our academy should be immense now. Don't envy Harper's role at all.

Yes it can be done...but you can't hang your hat on it. The only advantage you can have over any other clubs in that regard is hiring the best people to recruit young talent. I suppose we could pay more for a DOF than Spurs, Chelsea or Villa would. But realistically they will all want to follow the same model so I guess it comes down to who is the most attractive. We couldn't hold Man U off when it came to keeping Ashworth. Was that just a one off because of previous relations, or do the established super clubs already have a built in advantage?

Liverpool did it as well. Sold their star players like Suarez. The Coutinho money bought them Salah, Van Dijk and Alisson.

Even Ferguson sold amazing players at their peak - it happens, it will happen to us. No player is irreplaceable, even Isak.

Selling 2 or 3 top players at the same time would be a catastrophe, selling one of them to be able to build a better team would be sensible.

They only sold for absolutely crazy money mind. I think we'll sell as well if we receive those sort of offers, just not convinced we will. Teams are being a lot more cagey throwing money around now. Other than Chelsea.

The thing is that if we were to sell Isak for crazy money, it would have to be done as part of a bigger plan and I would have to think that money would have already been pre-spent - that is, deals would have already have been arranged contingent upon us selling Isak. There's no use selling and then sitting there with a pile of money that everyone will be looking to fleece us out of. Ideally it would all be set up well in advance.

That would require harmony and proper communication between the coaching staff and the sporting director, however.

Our problems are 2 fold.

Liverpool can sell for crazy money and invest it all back in + FfP headspace. We can’t - some of that money goes to repay FFP deficit.

And likewise clubs aren’t throwing the cash around like that anymore.

IMO we need to reduce the wage bill and sell if a player wants to break it.

Our wage bill is ever increasing. We’ve not sold anyone that would demand a significant wage rise. We’ve just eaten the costs.  A number of our players are on top 4-6 type wages. That must be 1 or 2.

We wont find a like for like striker for Isak, but we can have a more balanced team if we invest the money in a good way.

Yeah, not sure I have faith we will do that.

Bought Salah first, didn’t they? But yeah, Alisson and VVD were pretty much the missing pieces that won them the league.
