NUFC Transfer Rumours

Recommended Posts

I know it's a relatively small thing in the grand scheme of things but given our propensity to have at least four goalkeepers on the books with two of them training cones it makes absolute sense to make one of them club home grown - even if they're actually fourth choice you can name them as the third choice keeper in Europe and means we can name an extra outfield player in the squad.

The fact we have a few options (Woodman, Krul and Forster all out of contract - Alnwick down L1 with Cardiff and likely nominal fee) makes it seem even more obvious.

Get the window right and I think we could win the league next season.

I think CL will allow us to bring the players in to challenge, but actually playing in the CL will make it just out of reach.

Next season I’d like it to be:

Pope

New young GK who isn’t allergic to kicking the ball

Krul/Forster etc (club HG)

A body from the U21 if and when needed

Eddie is on record as saying he likes a certain number of keepers in his keeper pool for training purposes. That’s probably one too many this season because of Vladdy, but that is what it is.

Gillespie is paid to be part of that pool, at a higher standard than a junior could provide, albeit obviously not really that near the level of the main guys. He also, it seems from looking from the outside, appears to be a popular member of the squad, that adds to squad togetherness, which Eddie values.

Given his wages a likely to be fairly insignificant in the grand scheme of PSR, there seems little point in peddling him until his level starts to drop, he no longer wants to do it, or we get a kid coming through with a genuine chance of making it.

Waugh in The Athletic:

Quote

Is Trafford still the most likely goalkeeper? What about Caoimhin Kelleher or Aaron Ramsdale?

Waugh: Yes, Trafford is the top goalkeeper target as things stand, although he is not the only one. Reports in Spain last week claiming that Newcastle were close to signing Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, who has been linked with Arsenal and Aston Villa, were played down by sources who stress no incoming transfer deals are yet concluded.
