All the stories suggest no, but this would be a poor decision imo.

Can't see either of them sitting on the bench. No matter what game time they might be promised. It's either or for me.

If the budget is limited, it would be crazy imo to allocate £30m of it for another goalkeeper. The squad urgently needs strengthened in other areas.

That is my initial thoughts as well but I'll piss the bed after the window closes to save some potential embarrassment.

Surely Dubravka is going to be off to Saudi?  I imagine the new contract included an understanding that he would be allowed to move but it would allow us to receive a fee for him

I'm guessing we have between 120-150m to spend before sales. That gets you Trafford Elanga and Jao Pedro. Is that enough? Personally I don't think it improves the first 11 to be enough. We have what sounds like a lot of money but in this market it's not actually that much.

What’s that figure based on?

I refuse to believe talks haven't already taken place if we are to believe he is a long term target. So this news probably just means we are closing in on a conclusion.

You’d think so. It was close last summer so really it’s just about fee. Players side is done and dusted. Hopefully they’re not too far apart.

Think it will be same as usual, buying long term targets regardless of the position. Trafford has been on the radar for a year, if we can get the deal done, we'll just do it rather than buy someone we aren't convinced on.

I think deals can be done quickly if you want them to. Gotta feel like we are going to be haggling all summer to save a few quid. While Chelsea, City, Man U and Liverpool hoover up all the talent. Sounds familiar actually.

We're not really competing with those clubs in the transfer market. Not even close, really.

Unlike them, an expensive flop would be a major set back for us - both financially and on the pitch. We're in very narrow performance window where we need top 4 capable squad players, but on a top 7 budget. We need to buy extremely carefully.

Is it also maybe not a case of the Occam’s razor answer to this being that the budget isn’t as restricted as reported?

Can't underrate a goalie upgrade imo.

People had same thoughts when we signed Livramento and Hall, that it was ignoring key upgrades in favour of less vital positions. But it didn't take long to very much see the vision. This will very much be the same.

Agree it’s a 10 year vision rather than a temporary stop gap.

The club knows the budget, I'm sure everything is well calculated. No need for us fans to stress about these details

Eh, that's what we do. As a Newcastle fan it's in our remit to stress man, constantly.

Let's hope they've learnt their lesson so we don't have to sell anymore Andersons & Mintehs to avoid a points deduction.

Just a comment on our form, but take numbers in the 29 games from Nov 1 2024, around when Sandro switched with Bruno, and extrapolate them to 38 games and its

P38 W22 D4 L12 F77 A48 Pts 71

That'll get you CL every season, esp if fifth gets CL.

The two numbers to improve are goals conceded and defeats. We're already not far off a title winning number of goals scored. We should be aiming at conceding under 30 though, a huge improvement. Trafford may not be ready yet, but getting him in and working on him is a wise move.

Do they?

A lot of talk about ‘the budget’.  I think about 10-20% of our revenue is dependent on performance. And we can take a risk based approach - we don’t know what that risk decision is. And it can change.

Add European football and that’s an immediate -6/-10 points.

Not many thought we needed the Pope upgrade either and it was transformational. Also if this lad tears it up this season for Burnley he’ll be on the way to fucking Chelsea before we know it. He’s our long term target. Let’s get it done.

Apart from kicking, Pope is better than Dubravka at everything. And this was borne out in the stats.

That’s immediately not the case with Trafford.
