26 year old who scores goals for fun in the Prem?

Yes please.

That's probably taking it a bit far. Have seen several matches with Solanke where he looks more like a donkey than a super striker.

Reckon we’ll lowball PSG for Ekitike near the end of the window

They will accept and then he will turn us down after everything is booked in for the travel and medical.

It took us years and years. In 2004 we cleaned house, got in loads of cheap young players and started to build. Didn’t get top 4 for five years. After that it was another five years until Poch, then  we were established in the top four.

Big sales of our best players -

2006 - Carrick
2008 - Berbatov and Keane

2012 - Modric
2013 - Bale

2017 - Walker

2023 - Kane

Initially good management/ownership, then FFP forced it. It’s a slog,  two steps forward one step back etc etc. We had to sell our best players consistently - up till last year FFS. So bloody frustrating, but we made it - to here at least.

I understand the frustrations with FFP but I’m also happy that it’s reduced people throwing money at things, and for example we might be seeing Chelsea and hopefully Arsenal (please God) starting to struggle with it. Right now there genuinely are eight teams with a chance of winning the league this year or next year. You’ve got a really good set-up now (or are building one) on and off the pitch and it’s going to be financially stable and keep you at the top table probably for years. So…can you not enjoy the ride? I mean, what’s the rush?

Good post and the bolded bit is especially important. There are definitely things to dislike about FFP, but the general idea of it is a good one. Clubs shouldn't be left in ruin when some rich owner gets bored or takes things too far. The various financial restrictions imposed by the Premier League and UEFA are a bit different, but they are all tied to the same critical things: revenue. Growing that is the path to sustained success and we are starting incredibly far behind.

Man United, Spurs, and Arsenal all generate over £100m in matchday revenue. Man City, Liverpool, and Chelsea are all in the £70-85m range. In our last published accounts (21/22) we were under £30m. Even Villa, in the same time period with 10k less capacity, were almost £10m more. This is why 1) the stadium needs to be expanded 2) ticket prices are going to go up (unfortunately) and 3) corporate / high priced seating really needs to be increased. This category has a ceiling though - Man Utd's matchday revenue today is basically the same as it was more than a decade ago.

The next big bucket is commercial revenue. In our 21/22 accounts our commercial revenue was less than half of what Manchester United brought in in 2009. The Adidas and Sela deals are big, but that still leaves us £150-200m+ per year behind the Big 6. There are many options to explore here and I'm sure we're looking at everything, but getting to the figures the others generate requires a global footprint (see City Football Group), global partnerships (see Spurs and the NFL), and, more than anything, a global brand. That takes both consistent success and time.

And then there's player sales. Manchester City have brought in £330m in sales in the last 5 years to put on top of massive commercial growth and huge broadcasting income. Chelsea basically fund their whole operation this way. Ideally this would be led by the sales of good, non-elite academy players and a never-ending pipeline of Minteh type loan > sales. But, in the near to medium term, it's almost certainly going to have to include what Spurs did and that's bringing in huge fees for their best players. Sometimes that will work out great and other times we'll struggle to replace them.

Success is not going to be a straight line and we may be in one of the more frustrating periods. We broke into the Champions League, but there shouldn't be any expectation of being in it every year. Frankly, no one other than City (and we'll see post-Guardiola) can have that expectation anymore. Even before we got involved there were six clubs for four spots. We're trying to join that group along with Villa, who appear to be on a good path. Even if England consistently gets a 5th place we're probably looking at three clubs being left out each season who feel they should be in there. No one is going to be able to rely on the massive Champions League revenue, which makes all of the above even more important.

How much are they quoting for Solanke? Seems like we would likely get someone like Jonathan David for cheaper. Lille wanted €35m apparently.

Solanke is better. Jonathan David is mid as and there's a reason nobody has bought him.

I think Solanke is maturing in to a very decent striker, very much like Toney has, but I feel he misses a lot of decent chances still. His movement is excellent and he seems to have a decent all round game. I think for the price Bournemouth would probably ask, we'd be better off trying to get a younger forward with improvement in him. Easier said than done, though.

Just noticed that I like to use the word 'decent', which is pretty fucking decent.

I do think Solanke would be a great Wilson replacement and maybe even work in a 2 striker formation with Isak. But RW and defensive mid surely has to be a much bigger priority than ST right now.

Solanke seems incredibly underwhelming.

This. Six in 33 apps last season and a striker is the least of our worries for the rest of this season.

Not wanting to be a dick as I know it’s your club but the players you listed there all desperately wanted to move from Spurs. Wasn’t in your FFP planning strategy.

An Isak injury atm and we’re fucked. Would call that a pretty big worry.

He's got two weeks off after the City game. Plus more or less one game a week for the rest of the season.

By all means maybe a punt on a young prospect but Solanke?

The one thing I hope we continue to do this transfer window is bring in talented youngsters for our academy. Ultimately to become successful we will have to buy, develop, play and sell talent at a profit. I’d much rather we bring in 10 promising youngsters at 100k each than spend 50m on someone like Solanke.

Solanke would be a great addition to the squad if a good deal can be done.

I think they need to sign quality players who can slot in and out of the front 3 in order to compete in multiple competitions.

Not feasible for them all to be Isak/Gordon level, but can't be relying on them or others starting 3 games a week.

Liverpool have done this well with Jota and Gakpo.

…but it helped. And it was part and parcel of steadily growing the club to the point where this morning a foreign player has openly chosen us over Bayern Munich.

It was in the FFP planning strategy insofar as every player except Berbatov was bought young and relatively cheap and then developed. Berba was brought in relatively cheap and probably always saw us as a stepping stone. Hopefully now we’re closer to the other side of the pond.

Totally agree. For example IF we do sign another expensive striker then I’d like it to be a younger one with much higher potential both when it comes to football ability and as an “investment”. Signing a proper quality young striker for say 40-60m or whatever and that player could be worth 100+ in a not too distant future. It doesn’t necessarily have to be this expensive either. Can also be spread out.

Spaffing FFP reserves on Brexit premium players is not the way forward. Stop it Eddie and Andy.

Just corrected your last bit Dan was quite happy with those pesky foreigners at Brighton.

Players Union would take a salary cap to court imo and would win, just like football agents did when they tried to cap fees.

in the early 60’s they had a maximum wage in football, Len Whie went to court and won, maximum wage was scrapped.

Heard from a very unreliable ITK that Wilson is in Dubai house hunting even as we chat

£50m+ on a 26 year old back up striker would obviously be insane, especially given our FFP restrictions.

The more I think about it the more it’s obviously just Edwards bollocks.

Make that +++ rather than just +. There's no way we'd sell him in January for anything less than something ridiculous. You're talking £80m at least plus incentives on top. And no, I'm not saying that's what he's worth or what someone would pay. I'm saying that's what it would take to make the owner consider cashing in.

1. He's absolutely integral to our play. Everything revolves around the workrate he has up front but we have on backup option. Moore is the only other specialist striker on the books and he's a completely different type of striker that doesn't fit the system the manager wants to play. In fact, there seems a very high probability Moore is off to a Championship club this window. If we'd sold Solanke, we'd face going into the second half of the season with a completely new strike force, all recruited in January, which may not fire. If anything, this window will be about shipping Moore out and bringing in an alternate to Solanke. Selling Solanke now would hobble the team.

2. Finding suitable options that are also well priced in the January window isn't easy.

3. Solanke has only recently signed a contract extension so there's no pressure on us to cash in.

If he carries his form on and someone tries in the summer that might be a different story but it would take the kind of money nobody is going to pay to get our attention in this window.

That said, I'd imagine it's simply a lazy media link because of the Eddie connection.
