NUFC Transfer Rumours

Optimistic Nut

In offer to progress the ball up the field the ball needs to remain in play and not out for a throw in. The second pope is pressed he usually punts it either long or out of play.

He’s amongst the best shot stoppers but amongst the worst with the ball at his feet in the league.

Just dont think it matters for the team we are now. We are already a champions league team with Pope in the side with the best defensive record in the league.

Without him, we are the 4th highest scorers in the league, playing great football, although inconsistent.

And for the love of god, I hope we dont become a monotonous 700 passes across the back team. Drives me nuts

Eh not really given Villa managed it in Less revenue than us. Also, would have allowed us to dodge Tonali who, when you are in his fee and his wage is costing us twice as much.

The problem with getting players in on massive wages (even if they are a free transfer) is that it sets a precedent for what you’re willing to pay.

So then you end up putting more players in your squad towards that top end and it becomes difficult to manage.

At the minute we’ve got Bruno and now probably Joelinton (plus potentially Isak if he gets a new deal) up at that top end. But all of them have proven that they can do it for us. Whacking new (non-elite) players straight in with them is asking for trouble IMO.

£60 million would make Ramsdale the third most expensive goalkeeper of all time!

He will leave for around the £30 million mark.

Agree. Pope can play on for a few more years - Ramsdale will kick off if he's second fiddle to him. I don't see it being worthy of an upgrade to be honest. Saw him play at Emirates plenty of times - don't really rate him.

Err, you realise Bruno and Joe have got new contracts right? Bruno is definitely on more than that and Tonali is probably on about what Kamara is on.

and again, Villa have paid it with seemingly no issues, ultimately the salary is well below what other top 6 teams are paying.

You are not getting my point. Joelinton has just signed a new contract at probably around £120k a week. If he knows that someone like Kamara has come straight into the club at £150k a week, it is likely that he wouldn't accept less than that so we end up over paying wages for him. It is believed that Bruno is our top earner at £150k a week, again he potentially won't be happy if someone not as good as him just strolls straight in at the same salary. Tonali is apparently on £120k a week.

Tosin and Kelly are different they aren't going to be on £150k a week and therefore becoming the highest earners. The one thing that I think the new owners are doing right is not allowing the wage bill to run out of control, getting good players like Kamara in at £150k per week is potentially letting it go out of control because it has a knock on effect.

Ramsdale might be an upgrade on Pope, in the same way that Pope might have been (and indeed was) an upgrade on Dubravka, but he's going to cost at least three times as much. If we're going to drop £30-40m or more on a keeper I want it to be an elite level one.

Tbh I’d rather not sign anyone from Arsenal. Put the shutters up completely in terms of doing transfer business with them. Bunch of arseholes.

To add

Howe has suggested in his last few interviews, that we will be focussing on players who are on the up, who have high ceiling.

Think that is the way we will go going forward.

Got to weigh up what will help the side next season. Think it’s an absolute must we get a new keeper of some sorts. Dubravka is just not suited to the style we are going down, so any injury to Pope, we haven’t got a keeper that can replace like for like.

I’d want us to try and sign a goalkeeper that’s natural at sweeping and good with their feet. Even if their shot stopping is a bit average, having someone who can come in for Pope and not mess up the defence is important. Also one that’s got room to develop the consistency you get with age as a goalkeeper too.

Completely agree with this. Dubravka hasn't technically put a foot wrong since coming in, but just by being a different keeper it has had a massive impact on everything else. Defence having to play deeper as he doesn't sweep, more one on ones with the keeper, bigger gap between the defence and midfield etc. All this makes it harder to press as a unit.

A new goalkeeper is a must for me and if we could get Tosin and Kelly in, I would be happy to spend biggish to get our goalkeeper that we want for the next 10 years. Big spend on RW and GK, two free transfers in defence and then see what is left.

If we have the budget, ie we keep Bruno and Isak add Kelly and Tosin and a RW I’d be definitely looking to upgrade Pope.

Pope is a fantastic keeper but he’s a bit of liability with the ball at his feet.

I’m actually quite happy we don’t mess around with the ball at the back. See so many teams do it - apart from Man City - all others look vulnerable to the press,

I just feel if we're to consistently push we need someone at least comfortable playing out from the back.

Joe Hart seems like the last of the elite "non-ball playing" keepers and City recognised to stay at the top they needed a change in that area, even though Hart hadn't done much particularly wrong. This is where it feels we're at. Bruno is quality at resisting the press for example, a keeper who can confidently play out means he can start 15-20 yards further up the pitch and get him closer to the likes of Isak and Gordon for the killer pass. His 40-50 yard passes become 20-30 yard ones. Literally a gamechanger.

I guess they rarely have to spend money on transfers so can pay big wages

Haven't paid a fee for a transfer since the 20/21 season apparently.

Cash payments don't influence FFP. The fee is recognised and amortised according to the length of the contract.

I don't agree with the comparison. Pope was a much better keeper than Dubs based on GK statistics (save %, Xg prevented, claiming crosses etc., distance of defensive actions). That was hard evidence of what he was likely to bring to the team and it turned out to be true. That's not the same story with Ramsdale. Ramsdale is better with his feet - that is it.

Howe said in that Overlap interview that he'd rather go forward from the back in 1 or 2 passes instead of 5 or 6 and wants to progress up the pitch as quickly as possible. Doesn't want 10 passes in our own box etc.

On Pope, It's hard to say what he's personally responsible for but his numbers for us are fantastic. Just in the league, he is averaging about 2.5 saves a game, which is low, and has conceded only 46 in 51 games with 20 clean sheets. If we can do that with him (and a fit defence) then he's probably not a priority upgrade just yet if money is tight.

Tosin and Kelly, good squad options. Can’t really see why we want Ramsdale unless it’s to usurp Pope. What does he do better than Pope? Maybe they just want a younger keeper. Don’t want Olise because of his injury record.

Hi there

Long time lurker - signed up because I suspect there'll be a few Palace rumours going and I've always enjoyed this forum. The Olise injury record is fine imo - got one horror muscle injury in game and then was rushed back by Roy. Not a sick note.

Think your concern should be other. If he goes to you it would be with a release clause as a stepping stone club I very much suspect.  He'd fill a hole for you on the right and would be a major upgrade on anything you have but he'll be one to pass through and not build a club around. The boy is ambitious with talent to match. Of all our buys he came as the least heralded but was the only one to insist on a release clause. Yep, you're a big club and will get bigger but I rather think he's aiming higher than you're likely to go in the near foreseeable.  Clue is he speaks French!!!

Don't take this as an attitude problem. The attitude is great - you don't get voted players' player of the season if it isn't and Freedman specialises in bringing players with the right attitude, which is partly why he so's successful.

I struggle to spot the subtle differences between between top class/PL goalkeepers (…well players in general often!) but Ramsdale has represented England at all levels and is still on that upwards curve competence wise. At the right price I’d love to see him here. It gives the right message and, like Gordon, we could be getting a future England regular while we can afford him.

Thanks for the message and informed view re injuries. In terms of NUFC being a temporary staging post towards a really big club, suspect the majority opinion here will differ from yours.

There's two problems with Ramsdale as a £60m keeper

1) he's not worth £60m

2) we don't have £60m

The problem with 2) is that we'd need to sell Bruno to buy him, and that weakens us more than it strengthens us, plus it massively strengthens Arsenal whilst costing them very little in terms of money.

So no. Just no.

If Bruno must go, make it the full £100m and buy a keeper from abroad. You'll get better for less, without taking a direct rival's cast-off as a vastly overpriced makeweight into a deal they otherwise couldn't make.

Right now it's true. 2,3,4yrs time though, could be a vastly different story.

Of course it does - spent a long time in Gosforth and while I'm about as far from local as you can get I understand.

The reference was to PSG and that I imagine is where he sees himself - Toon are a few years out from that, no? Is that realistic? Consider that he has only just over one complete season in the PL and has the best goals per minute in the league with pens stripped out bar Haaland. Only just getting going imo - the goals are a new development this season. Last time around he had same figures for assists - he's adding to his game all the time.

One footed (very) but there's been a few good's like that. And you need to remember he's been producing these numbers for Palace:laugh2:

Think Arsenal would sell for 30-35m tbh, but cant see us being interested anyways. Hes on 120k a week ffs. Must just be a lazy rumour thats not willing to die
