For all we apparently keep a lid on transfer target leaks, all of our signings this summer have been all but confirmed well, well in advance of the official reveal. Particularly this one and Barnes.

Aye, you can be clamp down on leaks as much as you want at our end, but you won't stop selling clubs, agents and other third parties from talking.

Which they absolutely will, who doesn’t want a bidding war.

I don't know a lot about Livramento but this is exactly what I wanted us to do in terms of transfers, take other clubs better young British players and cement ourselves as a proper force. A bit like what we did 20 odd years ago when we signed Dyer, Bramble, Ambrose, LuaLua, Griffin, O'Brien, Bellamy, Des Hamilton etc

We might be trying to keep a lid on it, the Southampton end might not be though. If they're losing a player I don't see any harm in them leaking the info out in an attempt to start a bit of a bidding war.

Yeah, I suppose these deals would've happened a lot quicker if we didn't have to find someone to sell, and suddenly Livramento is a signing out of the blue as opposed to a protracted affair.

Just as a slight divergence, when was the last time there was a bidding war? You never really hear about them now.

Possibly Botman?

By all accounts AC Milan couldn't / wouldn't offer the same amount as us.

Perhaps not as much. What seems to happen is the buying club comes to an agreement with the player and his agent behind the scenes, before an agreement is made with the selling club. Competitors aren't keen to join in an auction for a player whose heart is already elsewhere.

The gap between club finances is so big now clubs only collide when the lt are near the same level on finances like rice with ars and citeh.

Plus there is always a list of possible targets now rather than just a singular one so clubs move on easier

Exactly mate. Some are kept under wraps (tonali, pope etc) and some arent (botman, Barnes,Gordon etc). There was a while there that anytime a poster put up a link to a player they were basically told to wise up and dismiss it cos we 'run a tight ship', 'its a smokescreen' etc etc.

as if we’re the only club in the world who tries to do business quietly.  All parties must want quiet business for that to happen.

Can’t wait to see what the plan is for him this season. Would be pretty wild to see us move Trippier around, but actually Livramento would be MUCH needed pace to the back line.

Think it's the smarter move than signing a left back, personally.  Yes Trippier is a level above both left backs, but look at the dropoff behind Trippier at right back. It'd weaken the team far more and it's inevitable he can't play a whole CL season. Rotation now and then will get the best out of Trippier.

People seem to forget how consistently good Targett was until his injury. He would give us a 7/10 every game. His injury record is generally solid so perhaps they're banking on a return to that. With Trippier (and potentially now Livramento) as attacking options on the right side, then two less attacking left backs is fine for balance. If we face a team that parks the bus, we can start both Livramento and Trippier since they're both comfortable on the left.

When Bruno/Trippier were out it hurt us and I think we've moved to address the squad depth weaknesses and done it with first-team quality players rather than signing players just to be a backup.
