TheBrownBottle
Just now, Checko said: I dunno, I may well be wrong about this, but I've definitely seen games where from Gordon's positioning it's looked like he was under instruction not to come back too deep and position himself as a counter attacking outlet instead, while the LCM comes over to cover. If anyone on here is secretly a player, please confirm one way or the other. A 4-3-3 requires players to drop into positions to offer cover when a player moves out of position - so if Hall pushes up, you'd expect the LCM and / or LW to drop a little deeper and / or wider temporarily to cover; Gordon not only doesn't, but he doesn't ever seem to actively use Hall's overlapping runs. It is a problem even if he is under instruction - Hall is often isolated (like last night when that side was clearly targeted second half).

Don't want to dwell on the negatives when the team did well collectively and the side will need that good feeling momentum. However agreed he drives forward and the stops and wants to go back and recycle the ball. Not that sort attacking instinct in him really a few times he was trying to keep 3 Liverpool players away and just ended up going back. I am hoping a proper attacking winger can do alot more with Tino's excellent driving runs and then takes over the crossing shooting bit.

Noticed a few occasions Hall bombed up the pitch, gave to Gordon who ignored (or had no awareness) that Lewis was now in space with just the by line ahead of him. Gordon turns inward and condenses our play! Hall left to cover backwards again. Edited December 5 by PauloGeordio

AyeDubbleYoo
I think he's aware but just prefers to use it as a decoy so he can come inside.

His bizarre and unnecessary backwards header on the halfway line ultimately led to Liverpool's third.

I think you're right, but it becomes predictable if he never uses the overlap option

I think it's prone to happening with him, he definitely goes to sleep at times. His defending is usually sound in general though, but as I said in the match thread, I wish he'd be less passive going forward. He is powerful and fast when he runs with the ball, but he constantly turns back (often into trouble) and looks for the easy pass. I think he's gone backwards massively in that regard since last season.

timeEd32
Thought he was good today with all the space in front of him, but he seems to have no idea what to do against a low block. Think he’s part of why we struggle so much in that scenario.
TRon
He was pretty competitive I thought. Looked up for the scrap from the first minute to the last where a lot of our players seemed to wilt after the first half.
nufcjmc
His usual performance great driving runs no end product and alot of backwards passes once he has no clue what to do with the ball in the final third.
Newcastle Fan
He's good and will only get better but i would like to see more of Trippier in the upcoming period as we need more quality on the ball, will be good to rotate between both in the busy period ahead. Smal
was absolutely shocking for the 4th goal, mind. Couldn’t sort his feet out. Not sure why we took Hall off to put Tino on his wrong side.
David Edgar Posted Thursday at 06:23 Share Posted Thursday at 06:23 Shame Tino's thread doesn't get a bump. He is imperious defending 1 v 1. If he can develop his game in the final third, we will genuinely have a World Class FB on either side.
kenlau88210 Posted Thursday at 06:36 Share Posted Thursday at 06:36 Trippier is a lot better on the ball but against tricky and fast wingers he can’t stay too close and will often just back off until he got cover to help. Longstaff often does the great job covering him. With Tino you just feel more confident as he is so good 1v1
andycap
What do you think is up with the lad? Is it to many instructions so just takes the safe route all the time and pass backwards. He plays every game so you wouldn't think it would be a confidence problem.
alexf
I think he's doing fine. I'd like him to stride forward even more than he does if possible because when he opens up he is a sight to behold and not many can keep with him. However on the flip side he really could do with developing his passing and final decision making. He often looks like he doesn't quite know what to do when he strides out. However he's starting to combine and get a few give and goes now I noticed. But that side will come and I think people need to manage expectations. He probably will never reach Trippier/ Hall levels of passing and crossing etc. But he is no doubt our best 1v1 defender and a very important part of our defence being the only one with recovery pace. And there’s no need for our fans to expect that level of passing. His strength is his defending (rightly so) and ball carrying. Just needs to continue to work that - he can be a deadly attacking threat if he’s just too good on the dribble and able to drill a ball low or find someone in the half space. No issues at all with him in current form, his defending is too damn good to even care about the attacking stuff.

M1tche
His only problem is that we're comparing him technically and attacking wise to the full back on the other side. His defending is class, as is his pace and power driving both ways. He'll get better going forward given time, he's still only
