Let me be clear, I don't want to sell Barnes, I think he should have been used more if anything.

But if we are serious about selling players before they start losing value, then it's something we have to do. He's 28, the offers will only be downhill from here.

True, but we're going to then need two LWs. There's a lot of goals/assists two players probably not as good as Barnes & Gordon at this stage will be needed to replicate.

An amazing finisher but all of our structural problems in attack stem from our wingers being awful at carrying the ball against teams that sit. Barnes would be perfect if we had a right winger that could stretch teams. We can’t go into another season with no winger being able to beat someone with their dribbling ability

Whilst it makes sense from an age and contract POV to sell Barnes if there's good money being thrown around, I'd be extremely nervous selling one of our best sources of non-penalty goals. The guy is 1-in-3 consistently and handing that over to a rival in Villa with no guarantee we'll replace effectively is scary.

£30-£40m recouped for Barnes would be good but if we go and spend it on another dickhead pace merchant who can't cross or shoot it's a terrible deal.

Gordon being sold looks absolutely nailed on.

I just can't see us wanting to sell Barnes too in that case.

Two unproven Premier League LWs is a gamble. A Premier League proven one that'd get their numbers would cost a fortune. Think we'd need to keep him for another year.

Aye, as I mentioned earlier that 18 months of no activity from us has made our long term planning extremely tricky. It really does feel like we are stuck .

I would sell him. He can finish, but the rest of his contribution is pretty weak. He's not a starting player, more of an impact sub and so a bit of a luxury in my books.

I love Barnes and my baseline position is that I'd hate to see him sold. He's streaky but by and large I think he's always been wildly underrated given what he's contributed. Twenty years ago he's probably a legend - scores shitloads of goals and has provided absolutely loads of massive moments - but in this age where most fans see every second of every game, he's inconsistent and/or limited.

However, I can definitely see the argument about selling well and if we're actually considering 'revolution rather than evolution' - selling all of Gordon, Barnes and Murphy would be a serious commitment to that approach.

I'm up for revolution but hope we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

One thing's for sure is that it would be painful seeing him tear it up for Villa if they finished ahead of us again.

A difference between him and say, Murphy, is that he doesn't seem to rely on how the team is playing to get the best out of him. Isak leaving made Murphy stand out like a sore thumb this season. Barnes has played in a top 6 Leicester team, a relegated Leicester team, a top 5 NUFC team and a bottom-half NUFC team and his numbers have remained pretty much constant.

His output has been decent when he starts and when we've needed something from him off the bench. That's a huge quality to lose.

As long as he produces his cracking output I'd keep him. some players you don't need to sell on for financial return a bit like salah they are hard to find.

always thought Eddie got the wrong winger to player striker.

should have been Barnes over Gordon.

better in the air, better finisher.

whilst Gordon was more effective on the wing.

If I could bet on this happening I would.

Pace pace pace and height height height is Eddie's two most loved attributes.

Gordon was played there for his pressing qualities. Barnes doesn’t have any.

We need to get better at selling players. Hes turning 29 before the end of the year. I dont want to sell him, hes the most lethal player we got.

Massive conundrum this. Thing about Barnes is that it's not just his output we'd miss, it's his mentality. Alongside Bruno, he's the only player we have with the bravery and quality to grab a game by the scruff of its neck. He lives for those moments and the rest of the team is shit scared of them in the main.
