Which Miley ?

Whichever has the most Geordie passion running through them.

Quality goes out of the window in games like this, and the forrins wont get the importance of the game so it is imperative that we field the most passionate Brexit/Geordie side possible.

I actually think quality counts more in games like this, inferior players can only offer more running and passion they don't suddenly develop skills and precision. But if we are well prepared then we can match the running, keep our heads and carve them to pieces.

Aye we won 3-1. They were Premier League at the time and we were top of Division 1 as it was known then. Drew 0-0 in the first leg at SJP.

Was my first experience of proper football violence and I remember thinking how mental the Boro fans were. Just full of absolute hatred. The season before they'd came up here and put all the windows out in the Three Bulls.

We played Sunderland 2 weeks later at Roker and I remember bricking it after what I'd seen at Middlesbrough. Our next door neighbour drove us down there and we parked well away from the ground. As we got nearer it became apparent that Sunderland was going to be nothing like Middlesbrough and it actually felt like more of a home game for us, and the Sunderland fans weren't interested in any bother.

Yeah I went to all of the TW/WT derbies from 1989 to 1993 and never saw any trouble at Roker. In fact, in the 2-1 win in 92 I was in the Fulwell end, and it became abundantly clear that there were loads of NUFC fans in that end, as loads of them started making their way down to the front. This was because the coppers could be seen escorting NUFC fans, who identified themselves, out of the Fulwell and along the pitch up to the Roker end. Me and my mate casually walked down the Fulwell steps, clear and obvious NUFC fans, and nobody said boo to us.

We didn't make it out of the Fulwell though, and I ended up getting hoyed out when Sunderland equalised. That's another story though. [emoji38]

Loads of bother at both in the early/mid 80s and Boro was by far the worst.

There's constant squabbling on RTG about the "liberties" we used to take over there.

We used to lose away to the smoggies constantly, too.  I can remember that the 3-0 loss there in the early ‘90s meant it had been nearly 30 years since we’d won in MBoro.  For point of comparison, I was 26 when we lost away to Sunderland for the first time in my lifetime.

I remember when Keegan came as a player  and we played at Boro (got beat) and there was hell on all over. The local news had some middle aged, middle class woman, boro fan "I dont care if we lose every other game and get relegated providing we beat these"

Their one-way rivalry used to get them animated - still would if we were in the same division.  It never quite worked for me, though Middlesbrough away always felt more dangerous.

FFS, what has happened to our fanbase

So being a "realist" is saying "we will lose" against Sunderland, nah mate, that is being negative just for the craic

I've no idea why some people bother to be fair if they expect us to lose all the time, feel free to mute me also, miserable fkrs man :hunter:

It was a misunderstanding, I somehow thought it was about the Liverpool game.

Great news for those of us who are red green colour blind.

I am spectacularly colourblind and I fucking hated trying to tell red and white, and black and white, stripes apart. Solid colour will be easier I reckon

I'm not particularly confident for this one like. I'm not being a "realist" or looking to say "I told you so".

Under normal circumstances I'd be pretty sure of victory, but given the injuries, fatigue and confidence of the squad I'm just not feeling it. That's not to say we can't or won't win, I really hope we do and I'll be fully behind the lads.

It was and their Police were quite obliging. They'd stop the train, buses, vans etc at Thornaby and tell you " there's the Boro lot, if you want to have a go then crack on, we're not getting involved". The invitation was turned down.

I got caught out, probably 83/84. There'd been bother in the street behind our end and we got split up, then the police sent me the wrong way to the train station so I was on my own. Got sussed out by a couple of their lot, got a couple of kicks up the arse to goad me, just about to take a pasting when 2 monsters came to my rescue and sent them running. 2 bouncers from the town, I remember one worked Manhattans and that's where we drove back to.

I don't know if people being sure we'll lose/win is just differing personalities. If you suffer from anxiety and tend to catasrophise then you've got a big event coming up that you're heavily invested in and you're going to fear the worst. Not that we don't have real concerns  due to form and injuries, but they can become exaggerated in the mind. In that respect, talking about how we're going to lose, and that means the fans will be mad, and that means Howe might be sacked is no different from if you've got a presentation coming up at work and you're sure that dodgy laptop won't work, and you'll forget what you were going to say, and then you'll get sacked and then you won't be able to pay the rent and...

So from that point of view it's not really - or at least not entirely - a footballing opinion, and can't be taken as such.  I think even the biggest doom mongers know really that it might be like the Man U game, where we all went into it expecting a hammering because of our form and injuries and then it immediately became apparent that hang on, this lot are shite and we're up for this.  But some people never like to get their hopes up because they don't want the crushing disappointment that can lead to.

Very much this. Every team is the same, more or less. Some fans are gung-ho every week, some fans are pessimistic. I tend to be more pessimistic because I’ve been a fan for 50 years and I know how much it hurts to lose so I’m trying to protect myself. It’s just a coping mechanism. I’m no less of a fan. I’ll still scream and shout and pray for a win.

FWIW I thought you’d beat Man U and said so. I thought you’d lose to Liverpool and that they’d generally get the rub of the refs. That’s just objectivity .

Naturally was a lot more confident when the draw was made.

We definitely should have enough for them, but given they'll be frothing at the mouths, barking at our players from minute one, we need to be very careful.

I'll go with (and would take) a score draw, then do the fuckers at home.

I'd say less than half used the buses that the club put on. Most either went on their usual supporters buses, train or metro. Used to have 2 dedicated Metro services that would run straight through without stopping, plus a couple of Northern Rail services which would also stop at Heworth.

Drinking out of a plastic cup at £6 or £7 a pint whilst others are chucking their beer all over the place isn't for everyone either. Many people just prefer a nice pub.

Metros and Northern Rail services replaced the club buses due to cost. They never co existed.

I understand that but that could never realistically happen with a 12:30KO In Sunderland anyway. You’d want to be at the ground 12ish latest with the increased allocation and the journey and parking would be 30-45mins at least. So you’d need to be drinking 9-11am. I just don’t see the need and like I’ve said unanswered it speaks volumes someone’s priorities. Plenty time post match for a drink if you can’t go a match day without one.

It’s a culture of ours I’ve never understood along with that 6am airport pint to a lesser extent. I think there’s more functioning alcoholics in this country than people care to admit. Like @huss9alluded to surely the bigger concern 8:30-12 is some breakfast/food ?

They most definitely did. Some did the official club buses whilst others did went on supporters buses and metros/trains for years.

If you are talking about turning up at their ground early then I suppose we did (I have never been into football violence by the way, just having a beer on away trips). It was a piece of piss compared to Boro. Sunderland you could have a drink in some of the pubs or on the beach without any bother.  Boro it was like the whole town were waiting for you.
