I actually think quality counts more in games like this, inferior players can only offer more running and passion they don't suddenly develop skills and precision. Me and my mate casually walked down the Fulwell steps, clear and obvious NUFC fans, and nobody said boo to us. Loads of bother at both in the early/mid 80s and Boro was by far the worst. There's constant squabbling on RTG about the "liberties" we used to take over there. I can remember that the 3-0 loss there in the early ‘90s meant it had been nearly 30 years since we’d won in MBoro. Under normal circumstances I'd be pretty sure of victory, but given the injuries, fatigue and confidence of the squad I'm just not feeling it. They'd stop the train, buses, vans etc at Thornaby and tell you " there's the Boro lot, if you want to have a go then crack on, we're not getting involved". The invitation was turned down. I got caught out, probably 83/84. There'd been bother in the street behind our end and we got split up, then the police sent me the wrong way to the train station so I was on my own. Got sussed out by a couple of their lot, got a couple of kicks up the arse to goad me, just about to take a pasting when 2 monsters came to my rescue and sent them running. 2 bouncers from the town, I remember one worked Manhattans and that's where we drove back to. If you suffer from anxiety and tend to catasrophise then you've got a big event coming up that you're heavily invested in and you're going to fear the worst. Not that we don't have real concerns due to form and injuries, but they can become exaggerated in the mind. In that respect, talking about how we're going to lose, and that means the fans will be mad, and that means Howe might be sacked is no different from if you've got a presentation coming up at work and you're sure that dodgy laptop won't work, and you'll forget what you were going to say, and then you'll get sacked and then you won't be able to pay the rent and... So from that point of view it's not really - or at least not entirely - a footballing opinion, and can't be taken as such. I think even the biggest doom mongers know really that it might be like the Man U game, where we all went into it expecting a hammering because of our form and injuries and then it immediately became apparent that hang on, this lot are shite and we're up for this. Some fans are gung-ho every week, some fans are pessimistic. I tend to be more pessimistic because I’ve been a fan for 50 years and I know how much it hurts to lose so I’m trying to protect myself. It’s just a coping mechanism. I’m no less of a fan. I’ll still scream and shout and pray for a win. FWIW I thought you’d beat Man U and said so. It’s a culture of ours I’ve never understood along with that 6am airport pint to a lesser extent. I think there’s more functioning alcoholics in this country than people care to admit.
