It's not really about playing Tripps at LB it's more the connection between the two. They know each others game. Tripps knows the runs Gordon would make and he's more than capable of putting him in even on his weaker side.

Guarantee if Gordon is on the left he gets at least 2 or 3 big scoring/assist opportunities from a trippier pass.

yeah tripps is a better LB with a pacy winger in front of him.

Even if he doesn't want to change the personnel, he could try a different system at least. The only square peg that would suffer here is by putting Saka in at left wingback. But sometimes you need to make sacrifices for the team and there is no other fit left footer that would be suited to that role and he has done  it earlier in his career.  But this is the bed Southgate has made for himself with the squad he has picked.

Just to try it in the last group game, if it doesn't work switch Saka back and get people like Gordon and Palmer an opportunity to show what they can do.  But at least in this system you would have natural width, a designated holding player, Rice and Bellingham as 8's driving forward, Foden linking everything in the middle and playing triangles, Trent and Saka able to whip crosses in early for Kane etc.

Yeah personally I wouldn't be using Trent either.  I was trying to pick something with one personnel change but a different system if Gareth wants most of his first choices in there.

Personally I think the main change needs to be Wharton in, Foden central and potentially Gordon wide left if were not changing system. But then Gareth would have to bench one of Rice, Bellingham or Foden and I can't see him doing it.

Saw a column on the BBC with Izzy Christensen wondering whether the way to accommodate TAA is to play him at LB instead of Trippier. What the fuck is wrong with people?

Defensively Tripps was fine last night, in fact better than most. But he's not helped by having no winger ahead of him to make up for his lack of attacking.

People suggest massive changes to accommodate 2 players who have not done it for England in TAA & Foden.

TAA didn't go to the WC right? That was the right move.

TAA should be playing RB. Get Walker has pace which is a strong asset for recovery, but hes fucking shit going forward. The cross for Kane yesterday was so bad. Great pace to create the chance to start off with, but then spent ages on the ball, before just smashing the cross head down into the defender, which then deflected onto a 2nd defender.

Guy has such little fineness to his crossing/passing in those situations. He’s never going to stick one perfectly between the CBs for Kane to score, which TAA would.

It’s poor from Southgate how in his tenure, he’s just hardly used TAA at RB. Which leaves it as play him CM (awful) or not picked :D

Trippier’s role for England probably sums things up for me at the minute.

1 - Push up high.

2 - Occupy space. Perfect for a switch.

3 - Get ball.
4 - ????

5 - Ball back to the general area of the centre halves.

When the solution to the problem is “only play people in their best position” and it’s not happening for at least three players each game with our left attacking side totally dead you just think what’s the fucking point. There’s a reason I couldn’t care less about England playing almost all the time, and it’s down to this sort of shit. Are France, Germany and Spain playing multiple people out of position? Not only out of their best positions but in positions they barely ever play in

Realistically should an English premier league left back struggle to play against either of the Serbia or Denmark's attack?

Yes maybe it would be a big ask against Spain, Germany etc but would a Hall, Colwill, Rico Lewis (even tino) offered a more natural fit and energy to attack from the left?

He looked so isolated on that side, I thought he had a good game and made some key tackles in and around our penalty area and made some good contributions in the attacking 3rd, but he was badly exposed by Foden drifting to the middle constantly.

Svens England once again like.

All the players, no idea how to fit them in. No real style of play and particularly boring.

Bellingham hasn't been particularly impressive in either game. Id drop him back and put Foden in as a #10. If Bellingham can't sit back and play alongside Rice, then one of them has to go.

TAA should be nowhere near centre midfield. Fair play for giving it a go, but that's done and dusted now.

                   Pickford

Walker.  Stones  Guehi    Trippier/Shaw

               Rice    Bellingham

 Saka.           Foden.          Gordon

                      Kane

Bellingham should be told to play deeper TBH, he's become a superstar so quickly but doing a job for the team wouldn't hurt his development.

Kane can come deep as much as he wants as long as we have wide forwards who can threaten in behind. Gordon being the obvious one.

Thats it like. Its part of his game to drop deep and look for runners in behind. Its a big part of the reason Sterling always looked good in an England shirt, him and Kane complimented eachother and he'd get in behind the defence often in part due to Kane's link up play. Its also the reason why Palmer isnt really the answer - another player that likes to drift in and effect play from that #10 position. Good player but I'm really not sure where he gets in and who for.

Yeah, that's it. Particularly World Cup '06 when the whole team was just wrong. Rooney up top on his own.

In a way I'm enjoying the situation we're in. Either Southgate is heading to an absolute flop of a tournament and possibly the sack, or he's going to have to make a couple of changes to inject some life back into the team. It'll be interesting to see which one he goes for.

Playing Gallagher instead of Trent won't change anything and is a pointless half measure.
