The only square peg that would suffer here is by putting Saka in at left wingback. But sometimes you need to make sacrifices for the team and there is no other fit left footer that would be suited to that role and he has done it earlier in his career. But this is the bed Southgate has made for himself with the squad he has picked. Just to try it in the last group game, if it doesn't work switch Saka back and get people like Gordon and Palmer an opportunity to show what they can do. But at least in this system you would have natural width, a designated holding player, Rice and Bellingham as 8's driving forward, Foden linking everything in the middle and playing triangles, Trent and Saka able to whip crosses in early for Kane etc. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was trying to pick something with one personnel change but a different system if Gareth wants most of his first choices in there. Personally I think the main change needs to be Wharton in, Foden central and potentially Gordon wide left if were not changing system. The cross for Kane yesterday was so bad. Great pace to create the chance to start off with, but then spent ages on the ball, before just smashing the cross head down into the defender, which then deflected onto a 2nd defender. Guy has such little fineness to his crossing/passing in those situations. He’s never going to stick one perfectly between the CBs for Kane to score, which TAA would. Yes maybe it would be a big ask against Spain, Germany etc but would a Hall, Colwill, Rico Lewis (even tino) offered a more natural fit and energy to attack from the left? He looked so isolated on that side, I thought he had a good game and made some key tackles in and around our penalty area and made some good contributions in the attacking 3rd, but he was badly exposed by Foden drifting to the middle constantly. Bellingham hasn't been particularly impressive in either game. Id drop him back and put Foden in as a #10. If Bellingham can't sit back and play alongside Rice, then one of them has to go. Its part of his game to drop deep and look for runners in behind. Its a big part of the reason Sterling always looked good in an England shirt, him and Kane complimented eachother and he'd get in behind the defence often in part due to Kane's link up play. Its also the reason why Palmer isnt really the answer - another player that likes to drift in and effect play from that #10 position. Good player but I'm really not sure where he gets in and who for. Either Southgate is heading to an absolute flop of a tournament and possibly the sack, or he's going to have to make a couple of changes to inject some life back into the team.
