Still don’t think we can afford to spend a big chunk of our budget on a keeper. Other more pressing areas needed imo.

I think GK is one of those pressing areas and the sooner addressed the better.

"It is hoped that a compromise will eventually be reached with Trafford still keen on the move, but it could be a transfer that drags on into the summer."

Good stuff...

Sounds about right. Should probably avoid clicking this thread for a few weeks. It will get done, just probably take a while getting there.

“Getting business done quickly” and not wanting to pay big fees don’t exactly go hand in hand unfortunately. There’s no incentive for the selling side to agree a low fee so early on in the summer. They’ll want to smoke out other bids. It’s why stingy teams like Tottenham tend to do their business so late in the window.

I love Pope and he's given us a good few years outside of his injuries. But if we want to evolve our style of play then we need a 'keeper that doesn't shank the ball out of touch or to opposition defenders 90% of the time. If Howe sees Trafford as being that 'keeper then it's a priority position imo.

I still think this was evidenced by Dubs's run this season. Obviously he's not better than Pope overall but I feel like we overall controlled games a lot better during that run than at other times of the season by virtue of having a 'keeper that didn't shit his keks with the ball at his feet, offsetting his shotstopping shortcomings.

I also can't see how Pope sticks around if he's not #1 so I could see us recouping a bit from him moving on if we do get a 'keeper in.

I know these transfers seldom happen but using Pope in the move makes plenty sense to me.

They play it out from the back. That’s their style. So I’m not sure they see Pope as the right fit.

Its better for them to get a good deal early so they can find a replacement.

We didn't have Tonali the season before. This is 23/24 I'm talking about. Both Tonali and Longstaff played in that West Ham game (2-2). They also both played a part in the Brighton loss.

Same season I’m referring to. Tonali’s removal changed results and our defensive cover from a midfield perspective.
