When I’ve watched him a few times, he reminds me of when Man City signed Vincent Kompany. Height, pace and strength, but he’s still young and continuing to develop in the role

oldtype
If he was a clear cut elite player with no flaws at 24 years old we wouldn’t have a chance of signing him. This is someone who we know extremely well as we have been scouting him for years. We like his fundamentals and Eddie thinks he can fix him. That’s good enough for me. The College Dropout
4 minutes ago, McCormick said: The fact that Howe elevates players isn’t an excuse to buy lesser talents though, especially for inflated money. Both Elanga and Thiaw would be Harvey Barnes-ish signings. I really like Barnes and I’m happy he’s here. Same with Elanga and Thiaw. But it’s the Bruno G, Isak and Tonali type signings that makes this side special and makes us go ‘wow’ and we’ve not been able to land any players of that profile. We have tried with Etikite and Sesko. I think that comes from having high targets from PIF. Reluctant to take risks. And also a lack of acumen in transfers
oldtype
It should be seen as a huge sign of confidence that he’s had a couple of bad seasons since we’ve started tracking him and we’ve still decided “nah, we trust our assessment. We’ll take him.”

Howe is an amazing coach but this water in to wine stuff gets taken way too far. Kelly was still shite, longstaff was average, Almiron was still shite, ASM was still a headless chicken, Gordon has went backwards after a good first season. Not every player coached by EH is gonna turn out amazing.

McCormick
Yeah, yeah Howe turns “water into wine”, which is kind of true but can we see what he turns wine into please? Also paying wine money for water is silly.

It should be noted that none of those were players that we scouted for an extended period of time and decided to spend big money on. Kelly was an opportunistic free transfer, others were holdovers from previous regime, and nobody can reasonably call Gordon a failure over what is hopefully a temporary dip in form. Again I love the revisionism at play here. The deal for Thaiw was there to be done for cheaper than now and we moved away from that deal. We wanted Guehi. We haven’t chased him for 2 years. We’ve messed this summer up so we’ve went for someone we opted against going for
