need to go full strength in the cup.

maybe kelly in for burn.

Burn has been one of our better performers of late so not sure what you are trying to say.  Is Kelly better than Burn?  Don't think so personally.

If we want to play a high line, Kelly makes sense.

OK, I'll give you that.  However has Kelly shown anything spectacular that removes Burn from the line-up.  I certainly haven't seen it, pace or no pace.

eddie doesnt think he's ready to start yet.

he needs 90 minutes alongside schar to get him used to our back 4 and "system".

home cup game is ideal.

he may turn out to be a better option than burn. we'll never know.

Can't see what this midfield offers at the moment.

Looks amazing on paper but tactically they'll at sea.  Like they've not a clue how to play together.

The whole setup just looks wrong. Need to always keep one midfielder deeper and probably just have 2 in there with Tonali and Bruno pivot.

Need shorter passing ranges as well as gaps are too big between midfield and attack.

We shouldn't be this shit with those players but maybe do need to sell a big player and fund a few improvements across the team. Even just bringing in a right winger won't massively improve us as we aren't functioning well in other areas, there's something up with our whole system.

It is mad that the stats were quite similar in terms of possession and number of passes.  As I felt like most of ours was meaningless possession and the slow passing around across the back 3-4, with Bruno often showing for it whilst being marked by a player or two.  With everyone else fucked off up the pitch and not really offering anything at all.  It is becoming a real problem.

I haven't seen decent highlights back.  The Sky ones show fuck all.  But I thought they were below par and there for the taking during large spells of the game.  Yet unfortunately for us, so were we and at the same time wasteful/unlucky in the big moments, again.  Was it Colwill that headed one out from right under his own bar and then sort of cleared Isak's header off the line not long after?  Isak deciding to try and skin half their team instead of trying to sneak one in on his left or play it to Longstaff or Joelinton was another massive moment.

Not sure our performances earlier in the season deserved much.  Yet we were picking up points.  We now have 2 points from 15 available, which could easily be 8 and probably should be based on the last 3 games.

I think the performances are actually slowly trending in the right direction.  But still some glaring issues that Howe seems too stubborn or incapable of fixing with the players available.  The building from the back is still lacking, the huge space between the back 4 and the midfield is still there, the CB pressing tactic with immobile CB's, the inability to sustain attacks or create decent chances on a more regular basis and the truly awful set pieces.

Nobody played particularly well bar Hall and Livramento (as a 1 on 1 defender, fairly poor on the ball again).  Hall probably MOTM, for me.  Joelinton put his usual shift in.  But was pretty bad getting caught in possession a few times which I think marks him down.

24 hours later and I'm still really annoyed by that game.

  • Isak failing to control multiple passes which led to counters, one of which was the second goal
  • Bruno making 4-5 passes straight to them and they weren't particularly ambitious passes
  • Tonali vacating the right side time and again.
  • Burn deciding it wasn't important to track Jackson until it was too late (not the only one guilty of this yesterday either)
  • Schar doing whatever the hell he was doing all day

Obviously it's up to the manager to get the players to perform and I'd be very interested in seeing us try something different, but yesterday feels like a game the players gave away. I'm struggling to remember one with so many obvious individual mistakes. I can't decide if that's more or less comforting than just not really showing up.
