I do remember a common thought on here being that it was their place we’d be taking in the top four after we beat them 2-0 at the end of 21/22.

Aye but they were never getting relegated

I got Rondon vibes with Isak's goal this weekend (at about 46 seconds)

Wijnaldum on his debut v Soton for me

This just isn't true

The players they had at the time had big names and were living on past potential. They were massively slipping, and being found out by everyone.

They had a spending spree a couple of years ago and changed a lot of their players out.

They were so much closer to rotting towards the bottom than becoming title challengers or top 4 contenders again.

They were absolutely never going to go down man

I don't think they've finished in the bottom half in about 30 years

12th in 1994/95.

Were last relegated in 1912/13.

Everything to suggest they could’ve finished bottom with less points than Derby if Arteta didn’t save them though.

Being sensible for a second, Arteta has done a great job at Arsenal. He completely reformed their side, made it bright and gave them a solid defence. He also got them to a whisker off the title....

However, he was given ridiculous amounts of money and looks as though they may have plateaued. Some of their signing seem dull. The look gassed from last year. Of course the worst thing for them is that Arteta is incredibly unlikeable. I imagine he's an absolute cunt to get on with.

Feel like this is just way too premature, just a rough patch while missing their best player.

Sorry, when I said plateau, I didn't necessarily mean I didn't think they would make a recover. I don't think they will win the league though.

My naive, young self went into that game optimistic about the season ahead.

Think we all did.  no Pardew. No Carver. Wijnaldum, Thauvin, Mbemba and Mitrovic.

I remember sticking with McClaren for way longer than I should have because we played some decent stuff at points, and it was more attractive on the eye than the dross Pardew served up.

Should've went after losing 5-1 at an average Chelsea. Had 2 and a half weeks until the next 2 games which were Stoke and Bournemouth.

Often think about that as a bit of a sliding doors moment; had Benitez come in then, got us another 3 or 4 points (3 would've kept us up assuming we also still drew to the mackems) and kept us up, what would the years after had looked like? Would Wijnaldum, Townsend et al stayed? What money would've Benitez been able to spend? What kind of players could a Benitez managed Newcastle in the PL in  2016 be able to attract? Would Ashley have reverted to type as soon as we stayed up? Where would we be now?

Interesting to think about imo.

Absolutely yes.

The last time Ashley did anything vaguely progressive and/or built on momentum was January 2012 with the Cisse signing. The dreadful season that followed firmly put a fork in that ever happening again.

I remember thinking we played some nice stuff in that 2-2 draw vs Southampton on the opening weekend and feeling really optimistic about the SM era

The rest of it was us getting absolutely ran over away from home (and sometimes at home too tbf) and him grinning like a tit in the post-match interviews, saying the word "magnificent" a lot and hilariously suggesting if we played like that all season we'd be fine.

The home cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday's second string with De Jong as a false 9 in a 4-6-0 formation was probably the very early sign that we were totally knackered with him at the helm.

Him turning up to work with that bizarre grin on his face whilst his reign was very publicly coming to an end was another high point.

Some dreadful memories from that season. The Norwich away game was a killer. Should’ve won it with a Cisse chance towards the end at 2-2 and then they scored with almost the last kick seconds later. 90 seconds of football that ultimately sealed our fate.

I said this at the time too - couldn't believe they didn't pull the trigger after Chelsea.

I know someone who's worked with Rafa and apparently he (Rafa) was adamant that had he had those extra two games and the time before them to work with the players (rather than starting with Champions-elect Leicester with little prep time, and three away games from the first four) he'd have kept us up.

I really dont think so. The Sunderland and Norwich games were so poor and they were after loads of time to prepare.

I'd have to disagree. The way we played under Rafa he needed a few weeks to really drill it into the players. You can see from the fifth game from where we went 3-3-0 including points against Man City and Liverpool, and that win against Spurs. We were flying. Imagine having 18 uninterrupted days on the training pitch and your first two games being Stoke and Bournemouth after that. Hard not to imagine we wouldn't have picked up three more points.

Liverpool first half was as bad as I've seen us in the top flight. Then they took the foot off the gas due to a big game in Europe midweek. Spurs was after we'd been relegated and they'd imploded at Chelsea the week before. Sunderland, Norwich and Palace were the big games, we were poor in them all. 4 points, needed at least 7.
