[FAC5] - Newcastle United vs Brighton & Hove Albion - 02/03/2025 @ 13:45 (Live on ITV1)

As close to full strength as possible for this I think and hope.

That doesn’t mean there can’t be changes. I know we don’t have loads of quality options. But that is one of the criticisms of Howe. We don’t really rotate to keep players fresh or to match up differently week to week.

Without looking and I don’t know what you’d even search. We must make close to the least changes to the team a season, unless forced due to injury or suspension.

Like Frank says above. We don’t play until a week Monday. So no reason we can’t attack this with a strong XI.

I might sound crazy, as this is only the 5th Round and we're in the final of the Carabao, but I genuinely think we have a better chance of winning this cup than the Carabao!

Which makes this a huge game, beat these, anyone at home or even Preston away in the next round and I'll be confident of two more Wembley trips!

As much a must win game as you get, like previously stated it does feel like a much better chance at silverware than the Carabao, strangely as we're already in thr final for that. We can beat anyone on our day as we have done in plenty of cup games with Howe, the only team we cannot seem to beat, even when we're better than them is Liverpool.

Hopefully we'll have 1 or 2 back for this and they can either play a part from the start or as an impact sub, Big Joe, Botman and Isak hopefully all play some part.

Let's have these!

Nahh, you're not the only one. Think we've good a fair chance against whoever is left in this if we turn up, whereas see very little hope against Liverpool.

Personally I find this whole ‘we’ve got a better chance at winning the FA Cup’ thing really odd. I’ll be the first to disagree then.

Sounds proper defeatist and we’re going on like Liverpool are Pep era Barca or something. We were unlucky at home to them in lots of ways. We’ve just been to Anfield minus our best player, best CB and a starting midfielder. Yet despite it being a crap game, played at an odd pace. We were far from disgraced.

Tomorrow we have an in form (ish) Brighton side. Then if we get through, 3 more games against the likes of Bournemouth, Fulham and City. Not beat any of them this season. Villa would hardly be an easy game either.

Then what about timing with all these games? Injuries, suspensions, form etc. At least the league cup final is in 2 weeks and we’ll ‘hopefully’ be something close to full strength.

But yeah. Just get through tomorrow and then Preston at home would be lovely. Bournemouth v City and Villa v Forest or something like that in the quarters.

I think it's been established I'm not an elite football mind and I get the thought that Liverpool are a better team but you are correct. Anything can happen. Newcastle are not far inferior to Liverpool. They can win this.

I mean they’re heavy favourites for a reason. But I’d still think I’d rather a one off game at Wembley against them for a cup.

As opposed to 3 games. Possibly against someone like City, Villa or Bournemouth away. Then another decent prem team in the semis and possibly the final.

Edit - that’s IF we manage to get past Brighton

It doesn't really make much sense mathematically. We would have to be heavy favourites (~65%) in all the last four FA Cup rounds to have as good a chance to lift the FA Cup as beating Liverpool in a one off match is.

I do too.  And it’s the FA Cup, which means a fuck ton more.

Bookies have us 5/1 for the LC and 6/1 for the FA Cup, and that isn’t how odds are calculated - it isn’t a coin-toss.  We’re second favourites for both cups.

Erm. We are a best priced 5/2 (3.5) to win the League Cup.

Best price of 8s (9.0) for the FA Cup.

Not sure what you’re on about here.

Before this weekend’s matches we were 5/1 LC, 6/1 FAC.  The results this weekend so far will have pushed our odds out for the cup, given that other teams have already gone through - which is why we’d be back out to 8s or 9s.

edit: we’ve clearly came in for the LC too.  I’m quoting the odds as they were last weekend.  Others have also quoted those odds - see the LC Final thread.

Why would our odds have halved in price for the League Cup all of a sudden?! Did we just beat Liverpool at Anfield or……

Sounds like utter bullshit TBH and people were quoting the wrong odds to start with. Possibly the ‘to win’ market. Which ignores extra time and penalties. Which we are around 4 or 5/1 for. Lift the trophy/win the competition is 5/2.

Also. We are still around 6/1 in some places for the FA Cup. Quoting best price for both for fairness.
