Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle United - 26/02/2025

Recommended Posts

It's confusing seeing people try to comfort themselves that it was only 2:0. That was the easiest game they will have all season. They coasted and scored with ease.

Only hope is to have all our beat players available for the final but I'm starting to doubt it that's going to happen and they certainly won't be match sharp and in form. We would need a Spurs 5:1 level of performance to have a hope.

Even if we were super aggressive and energetic like that, it feels like this Liverpool team can match that and have much stronger and faster athletes than we do.

McAteer basically said as much after the game the smarmy cunt.

Not even mad. One of my aspirations at the start of every season is to finally win at Anfield, but it's just almost ingrained in us that it won't happen. The wider context is that it's concerning how we seem to lack self belief against Liverpool and City at their grounds, but tonight is just "meh". Move on, get into the next round of the cup at the weekend.

As for the final? Be aggressive and pray Isak is fit.

Couldn't care less about the scoreline, it's the sense of complete resignation in our play that bothers me. We didn't have a shot on target despite having plenty of the ball, kept letting them get back into their shape for some reason, and our style and intent didn't change from nil nil to 1 nil to 2 nil.

Didn't even think Liverpool were good, they went just as mich through the motions of winning as we did losing. Lewis Hall was the only player that really showed his quality and he had 10x a harder job than anyone else. Everyone else was a good few notches below their ability.

Pope: 5

Livramento: 6

Schär: 6

Burn: 6

Hall: 8.5

Bruno: 5.5

Tonali: 6

Willock: 5

Murphy: 5

Wilson: 4

Gordon: 5

I think that's generous.  These players have the ability to beat any team but mentally they just didn't turn up.  Hall was the only one who showed any fight.

There's a lot of this squad that look finished.

Pope looks a shadow of himself since the injury. Wilson is shot to bits. Schar seems on the decline. Willock looks past his best.

The effects of very little recruitment the last few windows is starting to show.

It feels like a big refresh is needed in the summer.

So we're as close to 17th as we are to Liverpool points wise.

Quite fitting. I said before the game that in terms of salaries and purchasing power, we're probably closer to Wolves than Liverpool!

Although it's never great losing, sometimes a reality check is a needy reminder, we've come a long way, but we're nowhere near the regular top three/four sides, we're floaters, while you could probably predict the top three, the rest is a scrap between at least six teams.

Three absolute elite signings are still needed, without losing key players.

It's weird AF. It's like they watched a different game.

Nonsense to suggest it was their easiest game of the season mind.

Thought Hall was the only positive.

I still don’t know how you go up against Liverpool, they just look like they can change styles or up gears at any time. They really just strolled the whole game.

I don’t think we keep the ball well enough and  we look like we could concede goals every time teams counter us.

I kinda expected this tonight but tbh I’ll be gutted if I see something similar in the final.

That was the most bog standard/ generic Newcastle at Anfield performance there ever was, it was like both sets of players knew what the end result was, and just went through the motions to make it happen. Everything felt flat and personally I have zero emotion towards that at all, not anger, disappointment or annoyance, nothing, we played a better team and lost, and didn't disgrace ourselves. I won't lose any sleep over it.

I don't even think it was that bad a performance, and that we where particularly terrible, we were competitive, and we had the odd half chance, it was just meh. Hall did well I thought.

The squad is predictable and stale now, needs major work in the summer.

Fucking hell man. We’re three points off fourth. We’re having a wobble. We’ve been bent over by the FA and hobbled by the bent rules so we’ve not been able to upgrade the first team in two years.
Eddie is working miracles with a small squad who are fucking knackered.

We just don’t seem to have the legs in midfield and our decision making is atrocious. The amount of times we have lost the ball and immediately conceded. Teams now realise that if they step onto us our players are very error prone.

It felt effortless for Liverpool watching it from a Newcastle perspective. A stroll in the park for them. The goals felt phantom-like, as though they exerted little energy or will to create them but just found us opening doors and showing them the way, not through dreadful errors but just through a weird passivity and resignation. As if a 2-0 home win had been agreed upon and predetermined and all that was left to do was go through the motions.

I can take the loss but we barely put up a fight and it was our own doing with shit passes, not tracking and defending. A lot of it was basic stuff and Hall only decent one out of all of them.

Pope doesn't even bother saving shots anymore, Burn and Schar were terrible, Bruno and Tonali for the goals were shocking. Murphy got a few crosses off but is only good when gets behind the man, Willock and Gordon did fuck all and Wilson is done. No movement, running behind, dropping into space so just no options to play. We need different patterns, if you watch Liverpool they had runners and players moving into space away from their man, also more aggressive.

Very passive game, Liverpool did what they had to do without either team breaking out of second gear.

They're clearly better than us, but I'll be livid if we give them a soft, unforced goal in the final like we did for the first tonight.

This game won't make or break our season, but Sunday might. Cut out the silly errors please.

Allison didn't make any save. Not one. I'd understand more if they dominated possession - something I expected - but we had plenty of the ball and opportunities to break. Aside from the two Wilson horror-finishes, one being offside, we played at a noticeably slow pace and didn't even attempt any shots from outside the area. It was a strange performance.
