Is there still nothing about whether Brentford have accepted our offer or not? 

Forgive me for being cynical, but this has all the hallmarks of the local journos briefing that we're 'closing in on Wissa' whipping up a hullabaloo before Ornstein torpedos us with a 'Newcastles offer falls short of Brentfords valuation'

I like him but he turns 29 in less than a month and has one good season of top-flight football to his name, so I'm not sure that £35 million is any great bargain. I'd still sooner have him than some of the raw prospects or mediocre players we are being linked to for probably double the price. At least our interest in Wissa seems genuine rather than a product of desperation, and of course it's nice that the player wants to come.

Look at it this way. Whatever we pay today, Saudi will pay in 1 or 2 seasons time. Well get our money back, he'll get his CL dream and his final payday, and to psr, all he cost were wages (wilson covers that)

The story that Downie has been more or less spinning all week is that everything was effectively agreed, and we were just waiting on Brentford bringing someone (Ouattara) in.

More to do with how the player has already been linked there, so ending his career on a big pay day would be tempting. We can't profit from sales to pif clubs, but we can break even.

I get the fee is overpriced and it’s a case of we get 2 years and probably then see him out of his contract or hope to get £10m-£15m from a low end prem club, and would like better if we actually done some long term planning. 
 

But we didn’t, we messed things up for past 12 months, and Wissa is probably as close to sure thing we can get which is needed in our position.
