Could be massive that he now feels he has a bit of a point to prove after sitting out the first few months. If he doesn't feel 100% but thinks he can get there soon it could be an interesting last 15 or so games from him. Would love him to go on a Papiss Cisse / Joe Willock style scoring run.

His pressing is good and he seemed more agile and fast, very positive.

Keep mentioning it, but his shooting is weird, not sure I've seen him hit a ball cleanly for us yet and everything falls to his left. That'll need to improve. He scuffed the goal, then completely missed Barnes ball across.

The one thing I was most excited about was how lethal his finishing was last year, looked like a killer. Hopefully it’ll come.

I don’t remember Andy Cole having many match-controlling performances - I also don’t remember anyone complaining when he just kept scoring.  It’s an odd criticism - it’s like saying ‘sure, the goalkeeper kept a clean sheet and made a couple of vital saves, but he wasn’t finding gaps every five minutes with incisive passing’

There used to be this cantakerous old curmudgeon sat in from of me in the Milburn early 90s.... "That bloody Cole, all he does is score goals" was one of his classic whinges.

Cole is ever so slightly before my time, but bloody hell didn't realise he scored so many

I think the criticism of Wissa has been mostly poor first touch and not hitting the ball cleanly, both of which could maybe just be put down to rust after a long lay off. Cole and Haaland both scored a few bangers to go with the tap ins, but iirc, Wissa scored a few last couple of seasons as well.

He miss-hit the connection a bit against PSV but he got the most important part right, which was directing back to the left where the keeper was coming from. Great agility, awareness and body position needed to make sure that bit was done.

His flying kick assist was similar in a way.

Yeah I liked the replays on the assist. You can see he wasn't just trying to close down and force an error, but actually pass to Gordon.

I'd give Wissa the benefit of the doubt on the PSV finish as whilst it looked ugly, the replay showed that he hit the ball into the ground and back across goal.

I think it's the fact that his 3 goals for Newcastle so far have all been pretty ugly that is maybe swaying opinion on his finishing.

He absolutely loves the club like

On this part you’ll have to forgive me for being cynical - I think he treated Brentford like shite and has the mercenary in him.  But as long as he scores goals, we’re unlikely to grumble.

I disagree. They had a gentleman's agreement.

Wissa is in the latter half of his career and he had not earned dizzying money in his career. It was Brentford doing him dirty imo.

Was talking about this with pub friends, there is no reason we shouldn’t be able to get 5 or 6 years out him.
Just need to manage his match fitness and play time.

Did he always shout 'put ya foot in' at every opportunity? if so, he has sat behind me for years.

Whingeing, moaning old get.

I would assume if he starts banging in the goals to get us into the CL again the £55mil price will have proved worth while.

Agreed if he gets us back into CL or maybe europa it will have felt a worth while gamble as the money generated justifying the over spend.

Be interesting to know if we are at the point that our spending/budgeting relies on some form of europe every season or not.

Possibly not if you take Howe's comments from the presser a few weeks ago that our budget is ever shifting calculation (he didn't say that word for word just the general gist)
