Any European side I back ourselves, because they play open but then are rocked by how physically strong we area. Plus an iconic L16 win before going out in QFs, trumps same but the L16 being a win over Chelsea which will feel a shrug of the shoulders. Beat Barcelona / Chelsea > beat Tottenham and suddenly find ourselves in a CL semifinal. The stuff dreams would be made of. We better not lose to Qarabag. They rotate their line up a bit and have played less games than us this season.
South-Cheshire-Toon
I know someone has already answered this question - so apols in advance - Why is it that we could be playing either Monaco or Quargbag ? as I thought the final table was 9 vs 24, 10 vs 23 and so on. So it should be Monaco ?
Jonas
6 hours ago, Kid Icarus said: Not the one you'd expect out of that group, but I remember Collins being really good against us. Similar to against Metz when it felt like the only players name you ever heard the commentator say was 'Pires', it was Collins when we played Monaco. Thought he was a sure fire Dalglish signing that summer (Collins). Scottish, grew up a Newcastle fan I've read, left sided but more pragmatic and reliable (to a Dalglish) than Ginola. Likewise Colin Hendry. Instead Hamilton and Pistone.

rebelrouser
We have made £46.44M so far (€53.6M Givemesport article). We only get €1 for Knock out phase playoff (seeded), which seems very low. The next big prize is making the round of sixteen (€11M).

They have a small team where minutes is concentrated on a small selection that's so crucial to how they perform at the top level. Like Pedri is the lynchpin in the midfield and they'll run him into the ground everytime he's back available. Their away game against us is more an anomaly then the norm in terms of result/goals, which could be due to it being early in season. I'd fancy our chances more than against Chelsea where it'll be treated more like a Prem game.

Towards the beginning of May or end of April and it might happen, the extra month or so of wear and tear absolutely matters. I think they'll still be relatively fresh by that time. Jack14Bojangles
The record of the English clubs is impressive. Five teams directly through to the round of 16 and Toon through the play-offs. The Bundesliga, La Liga, and Serie A each have three clubs represented. The Premier League couldn't demonstrate more clearly that it is the strongest league in the world. I don't know how or what could happen, but anti-PL sentiment has to be growing across the rest of UEFA.

Gottlob
I think the English sides should be quite dominant when it comes to European competition at the moment. Theirs is comfortably the richest league and has the largest contingent of wealthy clubs. But the current Champions League format is great for all of the big clubs, of which we are one in a 36-team league. You can pretty much cruise to a top-16 or at worst top-24 finish and make your season on the back of remaining in the Champions League until late February. Paullow
Headline on ITV's Look North equivalent just there said the Magpies go further than they ever have before in the Champions League, heard that a few times, but it's incorrect. We have never been beyond a group stage before (until now), but this is just really the round of 32 (or technically the last 24), but we made the last 16 under Bobby in the 2000s when it was a 2 group stage format and we famously got through the first group stage after losing the first 3 matches.
