Ross Wilson (Sporting Director)

Recommended Posts

It feels like we are moving at a different pace already with Gordon, Trips going, Krafth going, offering schar a deal and Miley. Feels like preparing to overhaul and just sorting few things first. The links to players as well is a bit different and think he is actually running the show and getting the backing.

Let's see what they do for incomings next few weeks as would help with the mood.

We’ve been missing good structure since Dan left. Just need someone who gets things done. Always risk on who we buy after.

Gordon deal getting done this quick suggests him and Hopkinson have a good line of contact to PIF to get things finalised.

Unlike last season we have a plan which has probably been agreed by PIF at least in principle.

I think we will try to get business all done before start of the season if not earlier

It would be nice to think this assertive and quick action is part of a plan and how the structure wishes to operate going forward.

Alternatively the lack of him playing may mean this had secretly been a number of weeks in the making. Certainly the players side has been putting the feelers out there to garner interest this quickly from more than one club.

Week 1 of his window so far has seen Miley new long-term contract and Gordon sold for our second largest ever fee. Not a bad start. Hopefully lots more to come.

If I can play devil's advocate, it's a lot different signing players for Bournemouth versus us.

There's definitely some on that list we could and should have gone for (Rayan being one), but there's a few I wouldn't even touch now like Tavernier.

Spot on, and especially last summer when we were preparing for a champions league season and  had to sell our star striker, with our back up striker leaving on a free.

We basically set our sights too high, which lead to us missing out on our main targets, and meant we couldn't sell Isak. It wasn't until one of Europe's most exciting forwards in Woltemade became available the last week of the window we changed our stance on Isak, but with hindsight that obviously didn't work out and we would have been better off going with a lesser hyped player.

I just hope we have learnt our lesson for this summer, especially now with Gordon moving for big money. We need to be a lot smarter with how we spend it, but I reckon it will be a lot easier to identify targets this year compared to last.

They're also much more willing to include release clauses and juicy sell-ons.

Yup.

One of the challenges for Wilson is that you might lose out on lads to Bournemouth for those aforementioned reasons. Now say Rayan does great and we try to sign him, he might fancy Chelsea or Man Utd over us.

It forces us down the narrow scope of Elanga and Wissa which I'm hoping he'll avoid like the plague. We have good talent ID we just need to be swift.

Biggest challenge for Wilson is to improve our relationship with agents. If we had good relationships then we wouldn't have even got to the stage of considering some of our targets nevermind bidding for them. Can happen to one or two players but it was a systematic failure last summer.

I’m not sure that’s right. Agents will always string clubs along - they are looking for the best deal for their clients, not to help clubs. I’m sure, for example, Bayern have had plenty of encouragement from Gordon’s agent in the past month or so.

Transfers move faster when you have actual transfer staff instead of the manager doing it in his spare time shocker.

It’s usually buying where the issues start, not selling

Agents are out for themselves and have to protect their whole roster of players. Mess a club around and you could be harming future players.

This is all before even mentioning that agents often act on behalf of clubs in a deal and you also have very murky relationships where certain agents work very closely with particular clubs; just look at Newcastle under Shepherd and our relationship with Paul Stretford.
