Jose Mourinho on his Benfica being well beaten last night:

“This tells me about the level of Newcastle. We could not compete with their horsepower. We lost being compact and were exposed. It’s just a case of levels. Their second goal was a killer, psychologically. The man-of-the-match was Anthony Gordon. Their wingers have pace and power - and they have four of them”

Fair assessment.

We were just too fit, strong, quick etc.

love Benfica as a club. But based on last night they would struggle in the PL.

I don’t know if they had any other option but their approach was wrong. They’re not solid enough to defend deep, they couldn’t really press us and their long balls posed basically zero threat.

As I say, I don’t know what the options were for them but they played into our hands.

That final goal reminded me of when we used to go on the rampage the first season we qualified back in the CL. Absolutely sumptuous stuff. That the ball is won back, 2-0 up, by putting ludicrous amounts of pressure on their defence and going tight on the forwards. It is prime Edward Howe. Love it.

Watching that back we really should of had 3 in the first half. I wish Tripps would have just smashed it too.

Class match cam, we look so so good at times and it certainly seems like everyone is part of the team.
