In open play when we are not countered on, we put 11 players defending from 20-25 meters. How are we going to counter attack any team without any players up front? Leave atleast 1 or 2.. we do build up slow and try to find an opening or rely on mistakes. If you watch our corners we put our players next to the goalkeeper and hit it close to goal and hope we get a foot or head on the ball and it goes in.  When Steve Bruce was the manager we even had 1vs3 etc, it didnt mean we where having a good attack..  Our last two seasons we have relied to much on Isak imo. I do think we need to go back to the basic, give them more freedom, more high pressure and free flowing football. Yea, but which of our players can ran through if we counter from our own corner? Elanga yes, perhaps Gordon. And thats pretty much it. But you make a point: The problem with 4-3-3 with Howe is, it turns to 4-5-1 or even 5-4-1 occasionally without the ball. Then when there is Woltemade or Wissa up top, the pass have to be spot on so they can hold up for a few seconds. And because we lack ability to pass the ball, that often is not the case. They are isolated -> we lose the ball rightaway. Same happened with Isak and people were frustrated with him, when it was a ridiculous task. Problem: we don't have outlet or idea how to break when we get the ball deep in our side. But yesterday we had players up, that was not the problem. We really had very few counterattacking moments, cause Villa let us have the ball and were very compact. Seems like if we don't score first, at the moment there is no way we are winning the game. At least against slightly better teams. Crossing aimlessly just doesn't work if there is not right kind of movement.

GOTONEW
These kind of loses smart more than most. The kind where a win will be more than 3 points. It would shoot us up the league, help gap those below us, give us a massive boost etc etc. It didn't happen, and it wasn't for the want of trying. Ruined yesterday...but today is meh. We go on. jemo96
I’m just admitting Villa were the better team. Better organised, better coached and they have slightly better players. Something just hasn’t clicked for the toon yet with their erratic performances. I would welcome a new approach to their game as it’s gone stale and predictable.

Callum Wilson of even 2 seasons ago would have 20 goals by now this season. Exactly, we have no problem getting in, it's that next bit where we consistently come up short. Â I think Wissa will fill that role soon enough like and potential would have been had he not got injured immediately.
Ginola14
frustrating game  glaring chances missed/saved at 0-0 and 0-1 that sealed our fate  take those chances and I think we end up with at least a point, probably 3 .  fine margins etc  roll on the next game

It was a moment of realisation we were getting fuck all. We'd be a bit smug if Pope did the same, swings etc.He didn't do it much yesterday but the chips to the fullbacks are quite something in their accuracy

At least against slightly better teams. Crossing aimlessly just doesn't work if there is not right kind of movement.    Putting 3 up on defensive corners - then we could analyse where we are most likely to hit the ball. Normally one midle and two on the side.  Yes we play more 4-5-1 these days, we are to low. Thats what im saying about going back to the basic. We need to play with higher risk and press with all of our players, we normally press with 1-2 players, so its easy to play around us. Also when we have the ball, because of a low line the other team is allready organized by the time we are in their final third. We also move the ball around to slow when the other team is laying deep, we have wingers wo likes to go inside so we are missing the quick ball into the box, to much twisting and turning before the ball comes in. Wish we could change positions for the wingers when they are not working effectivly - atleast experiment more like we did in the start. This has been a problem like you say for a couple of seasons - we really need to go back to how Howe set us up that first season.
