A quick look at Edmilson's history reveals he's had injury problems all the way back to his young days playing in Brazil. At 31 and out for another 4-6 months, I think it's fair to say those injuries probably aren't going to go away.

We should really be looking at Marquez, who it seems will now be leaving Barcelona. They already have Puyol and Thuram and have put an 18M euro bid in for Milito. They're not looking to sell Marquez but it's widely predicted that once they get Milito (which now looks imminent) he'll be available. Atletico Madrid are linked.

god i'd love to see Marquez at CB for us, what a player

Well, no one can judge that at all, but i'll hedge my best and say with confidence that he wouldn't be. Chances are, he wouldn't even be first choice. And even if he were to be, there's a colossal array of other continental players who are more appropriate and/or cheaper, who could do the same job.

He's an injury prone player who, on the whole, is regarded as mediocre. Personally know absolutely nothing about him, but other than Sicko2ndbest and his list of world class individuals, no one's said owt startling about him. Can't even speak English apparantely? Hardly the experienced player that we need to bring on the likes of Taylor and Huntington and the rest.

If he's going for £1m or something, and is on half those wages, and on a short contract like two years or something - it's a decent deal, because he's got some experience and can cover more than one position. And is another body on the cheap.

£3.3m + £80k a week for three years or whatever it was, accumulates to something totally daft and not worth it. Could get someone so much better for that.

Some experience?

hes won world cup, champions league and la liga.

Marquez would be the right type of partner for Taylor, a classy composed defender with excellent reading of the game, someone who can play the ball out of defence. His partnership with Puyol has worked so well because of the contrast between Puyol's all-action defending and Marquez who anticipates danger early. A bit like Terry-Carvalho.

He'd cost quite a lot for a centre back but to see Atletico in for him suggests he might be within our reach. They're only in the Intertoto and have just lost their star player, and if he moves clubs he may want a new challenge rather than take a sizeable step down the same division. As soon as Barca get Milito it's widely believed that they'll listen to offers for Marquez. An available top class player in a position we need, it's the chance for Ashley to make his big name signing (if indeed that's what he wants) while keeping with our efforts to improve at the back. Forget about Edmilson.

If some can pull Deco out that hat I'll be satisfied.

Not going to happen.

I work for NOTW.

I'd still sign two centre-halves, at least one left-back and one tall/powerful defensive midfielder if we aren't going to lose any of the current playing squad. I'd take a specialist right-back as well if I can be greedy and if Geremi hasn't been signed to play there first-choice. That would see us into the enviable position of having two adequate (at the least) players to contest for every spot on the park and a few extra bodies for "emergencies" in each section of the pitch: Krul, Ramage, Luque and Carroll - all of whom wouldn't worry me if they had to play during a bad spell, which I'd be surprised to see happen under Allardyce.

And of the remaining players the only one I'd see as being utterly surplus/definitely sell is Stephen Carr, but that wasn't really the question.

I can not believe anyone would seriously think that

1. Marquez is crap, and

2. Wouldn't be an excellent signing for any second tranche PL team.

He's won pretty much everything going, he looked one of the best players at the last world cup, he'd be brilliant in this league.  I know football is all about opinions, but in mine, anyone who thinks he is "crap" is mad.

Would be an excellent signing.

Another player I reckon we could go for is Thuram - he's ageing but I reckon he could be an effective sweeper beside Taylor. His experience would be absolutely priceless in our squad.

He's been terribly off form mind, this is coming from someone who is a huge fan of him as well.

Mexico could have a canny team in the next few years with the likes of Vela and Dos Santos coming through. There's never been an issue with the technical side of the game, the country has always had issues developing players physically and with their conditioning. But now more and more are playing abroad this aspect now seems to be slowly creeping away.

We'd have to break the bank for Marquez. Nevertheless, would be an absolutely immense signing. Not that we would ever have a chance.

Why not?

All the Spanish papers are saying Barca will probably sell Marquez once they get Gabi Milito. Atletico Madrid are the only club linked with Marquez, but they don't exactly blow us out of the water. Marquez got his Spanish passport last November so he'd have no problems playing over here.

AS are claiming that Atletico would want Barca to seriously lower their price or even accept a loan deal. They're looking for a ball playing centre back and Marquez is said to be good friends with their coach. But I think if we were to offer something like £8m Barca would definitely listen. Andrade just went for £6.7M and although Depor are really skint, Marquez is about to become 4th choice at the Nou Camp while Andrade was the star player at Depor. To say we would never have a chance is to suggest that someone like Milan would come and snap him up, yet for the moment I only see Atletico putting their name forward.

Yorkie tends to generally be sceptical of our chances of signing anyone tbh.

hehe...HONESTLY, we should go for Salcido. Best defender here in Mexico, underrated and always performs better then Marquez. Was excellent at PSV and a very quiet player, Osorio is aonther mexican defender who is great. I dont like Marquez, because here in Mexico he gets the headlines as being overrated while people in Europe outside of Spain sees him as one of the best. He was at fault for Liverpool banging them out of the Champions League, and quite honestly he had many mistakes which made them loose out to Real. Hes a good player, no doubt otherwise he wouldnt be where he is, but Barcelona wants to offload him and its understandable, HES NOT THAT GREAT. We should go for Salcido.
