José Enrique

I really do hate this set up now, selling our best players for a profit and then getting in younger players who might turn into stars just for them to be sold two to three years on when they actually fulfill that promise. We then pretend that we're bidding for potential stars (Gameiro/gervinho) and keep our hopes up... Somebody please bring back the days when we kept our star players and sold the shitty ones...

Might just be that I'm really thick, but that does seem a more logical approach (football teams want to win games no)???

I really don't think that's the approach. Carroll is pretty much the only example of that. Enrique is coming to the end of his contract and is far too good for a mid table club. If he leaves it won't be part of a grand strategy to sell all our decent players.

mostly about Liverpool and their targets so a mention of Enrique.....according to Ballague "there has been interest from clubs  but no offers..Liverpool still have doubts about his defending"

http://www.talksport.co.uk/radio/kickoff/blog/2011-05-26/balague-liverpool-are-interested-juan-mata-and-jose-enrique-fabio-coentrao-no-go?

I would just like to add for any lurking Liverpool scouts that Enrique is a defensive liability and cost us many, many goals this season.

Oh hang on:

We are going to make Jose a very, very good offer and we are hoping he is going to accept it.

“We are realistic about Jose, because the ball is in his court on that one, not in ours.

“He will be offered a fantastic contract here, he knows that, but still it is going to be down to his decision. I am still hopeful.”

"Fantastic new contract on the table for Jose Enrique"

NEWCASTLE UNITED are set to offer Jose Enrique a “fantastic” new contract at St James’ Park.

While Alan Pardew remains “realistic” about the Magpies’ prospects of hanging on to the Spaniard, he is also “hopeful” Enrique will opt to stay on Tyneside.

The 25-year-old has – like stalemate star Joey Barton – one year left on his current deal, after which the £6.5m signing from Villarreal would be free to leave for nothing.

He had vowed to open talks on a new agreement once United secured their Premier League safety, but has thus far refused to commit his future to the club.

Enrique still has international ambitions and knows these would be enhanced if he was playing regular European football.

To that end, he has been linked with Bayern Munich and AC Milan, though the latter have just signed Taye Taiwo from Marseille.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson recently claimed on Norwegian TV a move to Anfield by Enrique was a “done deal,” but this was refuted by both clubs.

The Reds have since failed to qualify even for the Europa League.

Liverpool are understood to have turned their attention to Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho, Sporting Gijon’s Jose Angel and former Kop star Stephen Warnock, yet Enrique’s future remains clouded in doubt.

Pardew has stated he will not stand in the way of any player who wants to leave St James’ this summer, and United have contingency plans in the shape of 22-year-old Toulouse left-back Cheikh M’Bengue, Paul Konchesky and Warnock.

However, Pardew remains cautiously optimistic about keeping Enrique at the club.

He said: “We have been waiting to see his representatives, they are due here in the early part of next week.

“We are going to make Jose a very, very good offer and we are hoping he is going to accept it.

“We are realistic about Jose, because the ball is in his court on that one, not in ours.

“He will be offered a fantastic contract here, he knows that, but still it is going to be down to his decision. I am still hopeful.”

Enrique is close to Newcastle’s other Spanish-speaking stars Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez.

Asked if there was a danger Enrique’s departure would unsettle his fellow foreigners, Pardew added: “Of course, but there is nothing we can do about that.

“All we can do is bring the best possible players in.”

United are waiting for an answer from an unnamed target, with Pardew rating their chances as 60-40 in the club’s favour.

He confirmed a further bid has been lodged for a striker, believed to be Lorient’s Kevin Gameiro.

United are understood to have begun talks over a new deal with Kevin Nolan.

I wonder just how much does hinge on us bringing in this 60-40 Striker (as he shall henceforth be known) and whether that might be a signal of intent for the club which they hope might persaude Luis Enrique Iglesias to stay on.
