Even before both, Porro and Luiz both had clauses which they turned down. What level do they expect the players to reach when they’re moving them onto lesser clubs, do well and then move on again, if they’re repeatedly not activating the clauses they put in.

It's fine having a buyback clause but only really means anything if the player actually wants to go back. If Chelsea are going to wave ridiculous money in front of a player, they'll more often than not get their man.

Im imagining they’re releasing players who they expect aren’t going to reach their level. Adding a buyback clause is just a simple, cost free clause in case they got it wrong. Dunno what’s difficult to grasp about that.

They had option to do that with Lavia and didn’t, so doubt they do it here. Strange club, especially when you put those clauses in and not use them.
