It's a misguided sense of loyalty to an institution that no longer exists. The club, as it stands now, is a broken shell of what it used to be and that won't change in a hurry either. Sadly his career will be one of what might have been for me. No doubting he can put in a performance here and there, but he could and maybe should have been so much more than that.
