I think you're mistaking the word "sh*te" with "not as good as he was". Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Shearer wasn't as good in 2003 as he was in 1996 but he was still good. And Capello doesn't seem the type of manager to me who'd play someone who he didn't think was good enough. Hypothetically speaking, if Raul signed, who would make way? What would be your first choice 1/3 up top? Not trying to catch anyone out, I'm just curious as to how he'd fit in with Allardyce's formation.

Signing a good player and raising the club's profile. Sceptical on both reasons tbh. He used to be class and I doubt we'd be rocking European football if we signed him. He's been a key player for arguably the best team in the world for over 10 years. It wouldn't be like when we signed Kluivert who was on his way down and out of favour at Barcelona. Raul was still first-choice, and was a very important factor in van Nistelrooy scoring so many goals. How old is Raul now? I'm not having a go, I'd just question his motivation, leaving his beloved Real for a team in the North East of England. Just trying to see things from his perspective. Would it be much difference to when Zola went to Chelsea? Don't think geography is all that important if he felt the club was right. Fair enough but you're comparing Newcastle to London. My whole point is that, although he's not 'old' his best years are definitely behind him. He's on the wane and he's only ever played for Real Madrid, where he's a living legend. He has the lifestyle and the status. Can you really see him giving all that up to come to Newcastle? Personally, I can't.

He's never going to be first choice - if he was, he would have been by now - and McClaren clearly isn't that fussed, so he might aswell concentrate on his club career. You can see why he's done it. I can't actually, which is why I posted what I did! I rate the guy as a solid, dependable defender who can cover CH or RB. At a real push, as a DM. His versatility means he'd be in virtually England squad for the next few seasons, regardless of the manager. Genuinely struggling to see why he'd turn his back on England. May be it's just me?

A 29 year old CH retiring from Internationals seems a bit odd. Wonder why he's doing it?

Struggling to see the motive behind any move like this tbh. I'm hereby dismissing it as NOTW bollocks.

Be careful... ?? The choice of phrase wasn't the best was it? what? Just didn't want it to descend into a horrible "send 'em back where they came from" type thing. My apologies.

For £6.7m, I think he'd have been a snip tbh. We're thin on the ground for CH's and he'd have been a great addition personally. Meh, still think there are better options. Would rather just go for Campbell for £3m or something. Pricey for a 32-year-old but unquestionably worth it, imo. At the minute, our options at CH are a crocked Taylor, Ramage, Huntington and Rozehnal. Andrade would have been a great signing and would significantly lessen the chances of seeing Ramage this season. This would be a good thing.

That's exactly what I thought too. blueyes.gif "Private contractual issue involving Belamy and Liverpool".

It's his Blackburn debut away to Palace. Wonder if they show Berbatov's debut for Spurs in 15 years time?....

We have potential to offer him as well. Porto are a good club with an excellent history, but they will always have the limit of playing in the Portugese league. With a new manager and new billionaire owner we have the potential to be a top Premiership side, all we need to do is sell that too the player. Hate it when people say "great player but he'd never come here" this kind of negativity really pisses me off. I think it's more a case of people not expecting him to give up the lifestyle he currently has now as much as anything else. He's a big fish in a smallish pond and he may be quite content with that. I take your point though, if his decision was purely based on football reasons, he'd be better of challenging himself in a better league such as ours.

Not mutually exclusive imo.
-
He only gets noticed because so many people bite though. If he was simply ignored, he'd soon get bored and go back to his Spurs forum. Don't give him the reaction he wants.

I agree entirely but it's just the way things are I'm afraid. It's all the more annoying when there's so much enthusiasm about the place and most of us are genuinely looking forward to the matches coming up. The reality is, however, that this place could get into an awful lot of shite if someone posted the fixtures so it's better to err on the side of caution. I understand the frustration though.

Pardon? Both? Yea, I like Giggs. Best winger of all time IMO. And I need a new Shearer kit, because my old one is too small. I'll frame it though. Each to their own...

No harm done. Think someone seriously jumped the gun tbh. They haven't even been officially released yet and the list was speculation/bollocks anyway.

"As the Premiership fixtures lists for the 2007/08 season are released within the coming week, can everyone please remember that posting fixtures lists on the forum can potentially result in the site being shut down, and will therefore result in an immediate two week ban from the forum for the responsible user, without exception. Fixtures lists are copyrighted property of the FA and Football DataCo. Rulings state that "no part of the Fixtures Lists may be reproduced stored or transmitted in any form without the prior written permission of Football DataCo Limited". There are no excuses for any users who break this rule, and due to the fact that the site has been shut down in the past for this very thing, a zero-tolerance approach will be taken by all members of the moderating team. Please do not take any risks over this issue, and do not attempt to use any work-arounds. This includes using pretend club names and/or trying to disguise the fixture list into any other form. Thanks for your co-operation." Is what we're told. I'm guessing the bit in bold is the key part.

Nice story. I can also tell you that countless conversations i had with my mates about how limited shearer was as a player. Very good goalscorer, very good headerer of the ball and good hold up play. Shearer in his prime? Those mates are clearly just as stupid as you then. I love that you've tried to brush under the carpet the fact that you said Berbatov is more skilful, has more vision etc, than Peter Beardsley. Why don't you respond to the points put to you about him? Answer is because, if you've ever seen Pedro in his prime, you know it's a no-contest. hmmm i did actually and tbh i clearly remember saying that Beardsley was far more debateable then then the rest of them . In fact, when someone (think it was that sad loser Baggio) mentioned Beardsley, i was the first to say that. Beardsley and Berbatov are very similiar in style and i honestly dont know which one possess more attributes. Beardsley >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Shearer You dont know whos better? Beardsley or Berbatov? Right, thats me out of this 'Debate'. This is either a wind up, you're diluded or you can see in to the future. That's exactly what it is tbh. I think he started off actually believing he was right but enjoyed the attention he got when he subsequently got loads of bites and is trying it on again. Best off ignoring him imo.

Stop quoting facts and telling the truth! I know 1 poster who's now in tears after having read that. You, you, you........heartless beast. Well if your refering to me, i kinda stopped reading after ohmelads decided to lie by saying that Van Persie got more assists to Berbatov so i guess his not really "quoting facts and telling the truth" now is he. Ahhh..diddums...
