I don't think John Carver thinks much in general.

Need Brighton to come up through the play-offs so he can kick off an epic losing streak against their hated rivals.

He doesn't look worried in interviews in the slightest, does he?

Well this is probably not true. The higher you end up the bigger the money. I think what he really wants is a interesting team that gets a lot of TV-games thus a LOT of advertisement for Sports Direct. But if you need to spend 20 million on a striker to finish 15th instead of 18th, the extra placement money isn't going to cover it. And Sky and BT will be more interested in showing our games if we look like we might go down than if we're safe and no longer have anything to play for. The games where we have the most worldwide viewership for our billboards aren't because of us being exciting, it's because we're jobbing to Man U or Liverpool, and you get those games on TV no matter who you are.

Villa have generously taken one of the relegation spots, so all we have to do is be better than two, any two, of 18 other teams in the Premier League after spending more net in January than any other club in the division. And we don't even look like we can do that.

17th is Ashley's ambition - it means, from his point of view, he got it spot on and spent the bare minimum to keep the Premier League money rolling in. 10th place is an admission of failure, that he's inefficiently wasted money on the footballing side of the business that could have been better spent elsewhere.

To be fair, he can't cover both posts and the defence weren't protecting anything.

Nah it is. Season over Wind up the club.

Elliot unable to do anything but his Platoon impression. Useless defending.

Where have all the journos gone who were talking about him for England and Chelsea, crowing about how stupid we were for wanting him out? How come this guy is splashed over every back page and punditry show when he's winning, then just vanishes from the public mindset altogether in a smoke bomb when things are going badly? Was the same with us, everyone remembers him finishing 5th or winning those six games in a row, the rest just gets spliced out.

Pretty fly for an old guy. If McClaren was an alcoholic rascist they could reboot the Lethal Weapon franchise Does his jumper really say OLD? It's a crafty photoshop http://www.nufc.co.uk/javaImages/2b/51/0,,10278~14307627,00.jpg Geriatric Striker Rehabilitation Department.

Reminds me of that 17 year old who signed for Lazio.

If there's one thing that typifies the modern Newcastle United, it's the lack of a Plan B. When we didn't get McClaren, originally, it was just "OK, we just won't have a manager then and hope we can get him later" and we nearly got relegated. Even when he went to shit and Derby sacked him, there was never any shopping around. You'd think if we had £21 million to spend on a striker there'd be options available for us, but we're incredibly lazy and once we've identified a target, it's far too much work to find another one.
