It's no good going on about what might have been, we were given who WE, the fans wanted and we sent thousands of texts to prove it. http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/newcastleunited/news/tm_objectid=17089825&method=full&siteid=50081&headline=glenn-was-fans--choice-name_page.html Glenn was fans' choice By Luke Edwards, The Journal, May 17 2006 He described it as one of the most important decisions of his career and Newcastle United chairman Freddie Shepherd is adamant he has given the fans exactly what they want by appointing Glenn Roeder as manager. bluesleep.gif Roeder was officially unveiled as Graeme Souness' successor yesterday to bring to an end three months of wild speculation regarding Shepherd's intentions. And although the Magpies have been linked with the likes of Martin O'Neill, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Gerard Houllier, Sam Allardyce, Ronald Koeman and Alan Curbishley since Souness' departure in February, United's chairman claimed his mind had been made up by the support Roeder had received from the fans. bluesleep.gif As a former Newcastle defender and captain, Shepherd believes his new manager has the sort of special affinity with the supporters that enabled Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson to succeed at St James's Park. "The support of the fans is very important," said Shepherd, who has handed Roeder a two-year contract. "The amount of text messages and emails we have had in support of Glenn run into their thousands. "The supporters have identified Glenn as the man they want. We have listened to them. This is what they wanted. This is what they have got. "Managers with a Geordie connection have a feeling for the club. Bobby nearly did it. He was here for five years and he almost achieved it. Glenn was here for six years, his kids went to school here. I view him as one of us. Newcastle has been his club for a number of years. He understands it." Roeder was also quick to stress his love for a club he played for 219 times between 1983 and 1989, years, he insisted, were the happiest of his playing career. bluesleep.gif He said: "I'm elated to have been given this opportunity, especially as I'm a former Newcastle player and a former Newcastle captain. The mood is one of elation. I'm looking forward to the future. "In the last three months we have turned the season around and got the sort of results this club expects to record. I want to carry that on over the next couple of years, carry on those results and get the club to the right end of the table, the end where it deserves to be. "Having been here before, I have a feeling for the club. I'm looking forward to working for them for the next couple of years. I always said that when I looked back on my playing career and the clubs I played for, that Newcastle was quite easily the best." Both men bristled with ambition as they sat next to each other on a stage at St James's Park yesterday morning, with Shepherd making no secret of his desire for a top six finish in the Premiership, while Roeder expressed his confidence he would be rewarded with a contract extension, not if, but when he achieves the success his chairman demands. bluesleep.gif Shepherd added: "We looked at other contenders, other applicants but Glenn has won the job with the results he has achieved. bluesleep.gif He is the highest-placed English manager in the Premiership this season and we felt he deserved the job. "It has to be top six for Newcastle, with the players we have got and the set up we have; the facilities, the stadium, the training ground. We would expect any manager, not just Glenn, to achieve that given the wages we pay here. We pay Rolls Royce wages and we expect Rolls Royce performances." bluesleep.gif And, although Shepherd denied that Roeder had merely been employed to hold the role while Shearer studied for his badges, he did add: "Is Alan Glenn's successor? I'm sure Glenn would want to have Alan involved. He's made that quite clear."

My question has been answered. bluebiggrin.gif

The only person to blame for our current situation is none other than Fat Freddy of Cumbria, Roeder did not appoint himself.
-
Does anybody know if he's done well historically in his second season?
-
Mine was and still is: He is the wrong man for the job get him oot as soon as there is another good candidate. I only went for it as it was the closest to the way I feel. I would have gone for "Should never had the job in the first place" if it was an option.

I'm happy with my choice, it hasn't changed.

If things are happening without the knowledge of the team manager then it's up to him to say something, if he's got the balls, I don't think he has the balls to face up to Shepherd and if that's the case then he's going to get walked all over. Sometimes you have to say things even if doing so doesn't come natural. I suppose that's what you get when you appoint a puppet.

Laughable, we get a statement after his replacement has gone, we're a joke, we've got a clown running the circus that is Newcastle United. Kevin Bond was never the reserve team coach, he was Roeders assistant. Was I seeing things when I saw Tommy Craig standing beside Roeder during games and helping out? His title might have been reserve team coach, he wasn't coaching the reserves during first team games.

Spot on Indigo. Shepherd will not be able to appoint a good manager, they wouldn't work for him, he's our major problem.
-
We struggled to beat a pub team on Thursday, I wouldn't go into many games expecting to win the way we're playing. Roeder needs some good results soon or he's in danger of Freddy swinging the axe.
-
Before we went on that run above we finished 2nd twice, the run above followed 3rd, 6th, 2nd, 2nd. That's a much better sequence than what we've had most of the time under shepherd. Here's the teams that finished above Newcastle in our first 4 season in the Premiership. Manchester U, Blackburn Blackburn, Manchester, Nottingham F, Liverpool, Leeds Manchester U Manchester U

I've answered your question about Arsenal and Man U already, learn to read, I'm not repeating the answer just because you can't be bothered to find where you first asked it. You might not mind repeating yourself, I'd rather not. How many times has Freddy guided us to a league position above Shitty Villa? How many times has he guided us to a position below shitty villa? You should try answering questions, if Ellis and Villa are shitty and Freddy is good then the answer must be in our favour, right?
-
How many times do you think?
-
I've answered the question already about Man U and Arsenal, once is enough. In terms of league position since Freddy took over weve been below 4 teams, right, here's the 4. Year 1 Arsenal, Manchester U, Liverpool, Chelsea, Leeds, Blackburn, Aston Villa, West Ham, Derby, Leicester, Coventry, Southampton. Year 2 Manchester, Arsenal, Chelsea, Leeds, West Ham, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Derby, Middlesbrough, Leicester, Tottenham, Sheffield W. Year 3 Manchester, Arsenal, Leeds, Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Sunderland, Leicester, West Ham, Tottenham. Year 4 Manchester, Arsenal, Liverpool, Leeds, Ipswich, Chelsea, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Charlton, Southampton. Year 5 Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester U. Year 6 Manchester, Arsenal. Year 7 Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester U, Liverpool. Year 8 Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester U, Everton, Liverpool, Bolton, Middlesbrough, Manchester C, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Charlton, Birmingham, Fulham Year 9 Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Blackburn Rovers. Edit. It says a lot when we've been below shitty Villa and Doug Ellis 5 seasons out of 9. Only 4 teams have a higher average position, and qualifed for europe more than us. Fact. The fact that one club ie Southampton, finished above us twice in the last decade means absolutely sweet FA so far as I can see. Where are they now ? Do they have a shite board or a good board ? And remember - that they were above us for a LONG time when we had our own previous board .... Shitty Villa and Doug Ellis have been above us 5 times, the great Freddy has been above them and him 4 times. The shitty Arsenal and Man U as you call them have never finished below us while we've had Shepherd. Before Shepherd arrived only Man U finished above Newcastle, where are we now?

He thinks highly of you too. In the event of not getting a rich arab taking over the club, would you take one of the dozens of chairman we have overtaken in the last 13 years instead ? Or do you fancy your chances of getting one of the 4 above us to come here ? In the 9 years we've had shepherd, how many chairman have we gone above and how many have gone above us?

I suspect I know who he is, not that I'm arsed. He's obviously a broken, beaten man http://www.newcastle-online.com/nufcforum/index.php/topic,28614.msg540955.html#msg540955

I might be wrong but I think Ozzie is about. I thought the Souness supporters were deluded and thought he was going to bring success to the club although I don't know what they based that on. Some thought he was the manager so they had to support him for that reason if nothing else, they were still helping to keep him at the club just by supporting him.
-
I can hardly believe that bit, I thought my memory was bad. Anyway, what do you think of the idiots who supported Souness?
-
What's your opinion of the idiots who supported Souness regardless of his past record? We knew it was going to go wrong yet so many wouldn't listen.
-
I hope that was sarcasm, if only for the chances of keeping your sanity, Souness is one of the reasons we're signing rubbish like this.
