He's had good games and bad games at CB. Either way he isn't the answer and never will be till we get him partnered with a proper leader and dominant CB.
Pardew's fundamentally a coward, man. Any significant threat to his reputation or safety and he'll back down Surrey scrubbing windows till his next con.
We spent £4m on the likes of Bassedas alone. Over the first 4 years of his tenure he was backed very well.
By the way: "he's a miracle man, the chairman." - Sir Bobby Robson, 2003.
I'll let someone else dig up the figures, but we made plenty of expensive signings from 2000-2003 on Bobby's recommendations. He was well backed in the transfer market.
you can't just say with the exception of one summer and try to brush it under the carpet because that summer lead to us not getting into the CL and we haven't been back since. It was basically the beginning of the decline that eventually lead to relegation so no it can't and should not be ignored.
Which is why I acknowledged it.
We were an ambitious club that made bad decisions but always in the name of attempting to bring success and competing with the best. Totally different animal to the rubbish occupying SJP now.
Bobby generated a load of cash by taking us to the champions league.
Cash that was primarily spent before we were even close to qualifying for it. Shepherd deserves a lot of criticism, but he wanted to make the club successful and walked the walk. Give me that over '1 or 2 signings per season' any day of the week.
Robson got him most of those. He is the sole reason for our success under him. Dalgleish's was lucky with inheriting a great team before royally fucking it up.
Bobby was backed very well with transfer funds with the exception of one summer. We showed a lot of ambition back then.
I remember hearing about Shepherd getting in Dumas' face in his office and telling him he wasn't getting another penny out of the club. Wonder how many of the current lot he'd be saying that to.
