Aston Villa v Newcastle United (10/4/11) Pre-Match Thread
Segun Oluwaniyi replied to a topic in Football
Just thinking Bouma in that video. Genuinely amazing how quickly his career at the top level ended. I think he is back in Holland now, but he was probably my favourite left back in the Premiership, and he just fell off after one injury. -
TT may be unrealistic at this moment, but we should look at Oscar Wendt of Copenhagen if Enrique is going to be sold. He's actually been heavily linked to OM to replace Taiwo and is available on a free transfer. If we sell Enrique and replace him with a player of that quality on a free transfer, I will happy with the business we have done. Assuming we spend that money elsewehere.

Any rational footballer would have left this club at that time. People forget that supporters were bracing for a long spell in that division and serious financial difficulties. We went down at the same time at Middleborough and it was widely speculated that we would be experiencing the same fate. It's a short career, and I don't blame anyone (especially someone with no connection to us) for leaving like that. He's a very good footballer who provides cover at two positions which we lack it. I'd have him here anytime.

He's a sublime finisher overall. The penalty against Sunderland was brilliant - one of the best i've seen, and that's after years of watching Shearer take them. He's not. Doing something very well 1/4 times, very poorly 2/4 times and intermediately well 1/4 times makes you "below average", which would be a fitting description of Shola in nearly all aspects of football other than aerial ability and physical strength. I'm not someone who normally laughs, but that Shola video a page or two back really caught me. It was brilliant.

I've said this before, but the "laughing" that occurs when Spurs lose in the highest reaches of club football is embarrassing given our current status. When we are thinking of a CL semifinal as a good possibility, rather than something we have never achieved despite being a similar club, we can laugh at their failures in that endeavour. As a Nigerian I could not laugh at Ghana's hilarious defeat in the WC quarters (though I did) as we have never accomplished that stage. I hold a similar stance with regards to Spurs and any other clubs of our nature that build to such a level.

I can definitely sympathise. International football is just a cruel thing for 95 percent of people in the world. It's the same mentality and mistakes that have plagued the African and lower tier South American teams for years. It is interesting how many of the top, top nations do so averagely at such competitions. The key is developing these players to the next stage of their career. It is not productive to use them as tools for national glory and then to discard them. Why any established players over 21 with any int'l caps are called upon is a mystery to me.

Nigel would immediately become our second best central midfielder.
-
Gervinho is much more of a wing forward than a target man. Adel and HBA will provide no defensive cover at all, and this would be a minor issue with Barton and Ireland also providing no defensive cover. I like some of the players, but that is a poor way to assemble them.

I too was going to post this, but I didn't want to be like Parky. Posting things that only I care about or understand. No one will read this, but I'll type it anyway. I am not surprised by this, man. Like the East European nations, the lesser powers in Africa have developed to a point where they are no longer doormats. You better come ready if you expect three points. Togo and Angola were also unknowns when they beat complacent powers to make WC 2006. Generally, it is very difficult to travel well on the African continent. Going from the Premiership to a dirt pitch and atrocious accommodations in some strange, desperate country is always going to be difficult. Even Ghana, who every seems to love, couldn't win against a competitive team in Sudan. I think Nigeria should qualify (now that they have an actual coach, which wasn't the case until recently), but I fully expected an underprepared team to be defeated in Conakry. You might have read about Egypt's minor issues in your local papers. Cannot be helpful. They're in transition, anyway. These Arab nations always struggle to win matches away in Black Africa, anyway. They do well at the ACN (as they have Africa-based players and are the most organised), but they fail in WCQ recently. Cameroun, like Nigeria, are recovering from a horrific WC campaign and massive upheaval, and unfortunately got drawn with a damn good Senegal team (Sow and Niang upfront, ffs) who are not underachieving for once. Cabo Verde received a great draw. Mali consistently achieve nothing with all their talent, while Zimbabwe and Liberia are awful. I didn't know Botswana played football though. That I can't explain away.

I think there are 14 (maybe 15, Spurs is questionable) Premiership sides that would be very willing to employ Mr. Barton. He'll not match his current wage at any club, though.
-
Pattison is the worst by some distance. I really don't have any idea how he became a footballer, vastly under-qualified. He has to be one of the least talented people to ever play in the Premiership. The corpses of Carr and Babayaro were awful for us, but obviously these players were quite good when their careers were alive.
-
Steven is a better right back and a better centre back than anyone on the list. Probably the best right winger as well. I think he's not far off Williamson, tbh.
-
According to some internet users, Ancelottti has a similar arrangement to Van Gaal and will leave at the end of the season.

Balla-gay is an Espanyol fan, like. Aye that plays a role, but he was going crazy about how great Mourinho's new system from last night (Alonso, Khedira AND Lass) and that everything seems to have clicked for them now. Conversely, he says Barca's post-WC tiredness is finally starting to show and they've ran out of defenders too. The first game after the internationals is away to Villarreal too. Interesting viewpoint, but I still reckon it'll be Barcelona. Aye, because Real Madrid had NO players at the WC. The majority of Barcelona's first XI played in the World Cup Final.
-
Well, Mikel played for Lyn, which was the shittiest team in the league by a landslide. The occational gem does pop up! Edu at Hoffenheim as well, Moa/Konan Ya at Hannover etc etc. Norway will produce some good players in the years to come imo Out of the four players mentioned, Norway produced only one. The league is a good starting place for foreign talent, though.
-
I think Barca will win the league, but lose to Real in the CL semifinals. It's just difficult to see Barca dropping points to anyone outside the top five teams in the country. They just completely dismantle all poor teams. Of course, they dropped points to Heracles and Gijon, so I don't know what I am talking about probably. French Le Classique comes on pretty soon. Very important match. Lucho on bench after being robbed by guns.

I love the certainty. It is amazing that one can hold such a final opinion on a man at the age of 20. Footballers are human and they change in similar ways to other people. Pato is the same age as Balotelli for all intents and purposes. He is less than a year older.
-
Do all of you have money on Chelsea? They have two away goals. Why would you expect them to do something other than nothing?
-
None of the French sides have the final quality and class to really compete. Marseille and Lyon both make it very tough for the top sides in Europe, but can't seem to actually overcome them. Frustrating.
-
Just a bit. I feel he will become a good player for that club. Already come a long way from the depths of uselessness that he reached during his early time at that particular club/
-
Very disheartening when OM have the ball in the box and the Man U supporters start clapping while we still have the ball.
-
Rooney love is nonsense. "What a pass!!! What a pass!!!" As Taiwo easily intercepts.
-
Inter and Bayern are both awful teams.
-
Beat me to it. It was a fairly difficult chance, man. Good goal tbf.

I'm reading descriptions here. Will someone please tell me if Mandanda was at fault? Or who was generally at fault?
