And although it wasn't given, Owen also had an assist today. Do they credit assists to own goals?

You have a handicap for seeing if Martins did well or not though, with him being Nigerian. Martins isn't a bad player, he just needs to work on being less egoistic and his link-up play with others. Individually he is quite good, but he also needs to work on his finishing skills. One awesome goal for the cameras in every 6-7 game is not good enough, even if it gives the impression he is awesome. Honestly, I thought both strikers were alright today. Even Carrol tried pretty hard when he came on. Everyone else seems to want to crucify the midget with the afro. I don't know, I just don't see what he did all that wrong today, had some decent moments actually. Does look off-color though I'll admit, but I really fail to see how this is the tipping point in him being a bad player. Think Owen is really close to being back fit and sharp again, and that's something we need. Especially see as the Dane can't breath right now. edit:

Neither was great. Neither was awful. Oba threatened at times and so did Owen. Both players managed it despite being provided with very little. Don't understand the vitriol towards either. Like I mean it's neither of their faults we lost. I guess I shouldn't be surpirsed that the Oba and Owen threads are really active now, and the Coloccini, Butt, RTaylor, etc. threads are dormant.

Didn't think the performance was all that bad really. Thought Michael and Oba did pretty well when given the opportunity. Seen there's been quite a bit of vitriol toward the two of them, which honestly has surprised me. Neither was one of our main problems and both managed to threaten Chelsea's defence a few times. Thought the midfield 4 put in a good shift against a vastly superior group of players. I think Guthrie really has potential to be a class player if we can keep him around. The defensive performance is typical of the way the defence has performed all season. They were doing a good job, and doing fairly easily as well. Really keeping Chelsea at bay. Then, one error, and it all goes to hell. Something is seriously wrong with Coloccini mentally. He has talent, but his confidence is shattered. You could tell this by how much worse he played AFTER his initial error. That whole Boumsong syndrome seems to affecting him, and that's not something we can afford. Really a shame we couldn't get even a point from the Man U, Arsenal, and Chelsea matches as we've been competitive in all three.

How is he a typical Ashley appointment? Kinnear was a desperation move after the team spiralled to hell under Hughton. Keegan and Shearer were appointed simply to "bring the magic back" to a club that's been in decline for some time. Keegan had definitely been at the highest level as well.

See, I think we'll be full of energy and drive but I am concerned about the midfield. If Lampard, Obi, and Essien are fit, I think we'll struggle to touch the ball. Essien is so powerful and Lampard an Obi both are really composed. If Ballack starts, I like our chances, tbh.

US looked pretty good last night, but what happened to TnT. They were awful. It's not like the US atmosphere is intimidating either. They may aswell just have stayed home. They should hire Shaka Hislop as their manager.

I'm guessing all that initial goodwill for Maradona is gone now. I'm struggling to believe (altitude or not) that a team that included Zanetti, Heinze, Maxi Rodriguez, Mascherano, Messi, Tevez, and Gago has lost to Bolivia.

I think it's a sad indictment of British society that Jose is easier to understand than Nile.

there's one thing about nufc, we never ever dull You must of missed the Souness years. WRONG Babatunde - you really are a joke at times. I see a pattern developing here. Hold on. What did I do? The football under Souness was boring, even more so than now imo.Though yeah, we did have two players fight on the pitch, I think I may have erased that from memory. Stupeedo-What is your problem? I'm not one for fighting people over the internet, so please cease and desist.

Is Carrol fit? Seems like I haven't seen him for ages. Frankly, I think Xisco and Foluwashola will be ahead of Carroll in the pecking order.
-
Can't see any reason to pick Carroll over Lovenkrands. I think we could see the reemergence of Xisco under Shearer, or wait is Viduka still employed by us?!
-
Realistically speaking, the better quality options such as Bruce etc wouldn't touch us with a bargepole if we went down. We'd have been stuck with Kinnear. Shearer would be the best option, definitely. I think playing under Shearer for Newcastle United could convince a few players (not the likes of Owen, Martins, Jonas obviously) to stay one year with us in the CCC and try to get us promoted.
-
Why would one assume that Shearer would get rid of our aging British players? Hmmmm ... yeah, just as likely Shearer keeps the experienced Brits around tbh. However, the difference is that he will not put up with crap performances from them and will definitely let them know if they are not doing the job Or he could play the experienced foreign s**** in Geremi, Cacraper, Viduka (chance would be a fine thing) or the biggest transfer flop of the season AKA Colo. He could. Doesn't have a choice really. We are the UN of vastly experienced players who play like s***. I'd just think Shearer would want to bring/keep British players to Newcastle. (Just a shame most of ours are old and s***) maybe he'll just pick what he considers to be the best bunch of players to do a given task regardless of age or nationality ? Naaa Shearer wont be interested in picking teams to win games, he will be checking passports for age & nationally. He has 8 games to send out the oldest British team he can. You'd hope he pick the best team yeah. I was referring more to the players he'd want to keep around/bring in the transfer market. (assuming the man stays long term) Lots of managers seem to sign players that come from similar background/language/footballing culture as them.

Just starting to realise how ludicrous this sitaution is. We've appointed a beloved, young, high profile manager until the end of the season, while our hated, old, low-profile manager (who has a multiyear contract) recuperates in the hospital. Also, this new young manager supposedly hates, and has publically spoken out against the backroom staff of the club.
-
football is 90% confidence and 10% ability That's a rubbish statement, just so you know.
-
Has there even been any intimation that Shearer is the long term appointment? You'd think they'd just give him the reigns until May and make long term decisions after that.
-
surely you can only judge his suitability long term on his short term performance. Well, yeah that's true. Basically what I am saying is that I don't think Shearer will make a good manager. But I am acknowledging that his status and what he means to the club could be vital this season, but that this effect will not last long term.
-
Not a fan of him being our manager really. At least not in the long term. But, regardless, it should be a lift to the team/supporters this season and hopefully it contributes to us staying up (and Kinnear quietly leaving the club).
