I don't really see how we need him other than off the bench? And why would we over-pay for someone to sit on our bench? I mean I'm all for depth, but Townsend at £14m is absolutely ridiculous. Rather give Thauvin a chance and put that money into improving at LB and getting someone like Berahino. We aren't going to sign a new left back though. And personally I think it would help Dummett if Townsend were to be playing down that side ahead of him. Our squad lacks a pacey, direct, out and out winger. Aarons and arguably Thauvin could become that player, but they are sure as hell not ready to be counted on from what we've seen and read so far. Who do we have vying for the Left Wing spot at the moment? Perez (a central player), Gini (Better in the centre), Thauvin and Aarons. None of those options are good enough for me, and I'm talking about having a proper impact this season, not for the long term future.
-
Think it's harsh to call his 30 minutes 'lightweight', there was a moment where he went shoulder to shoulder with a West ham player and completely floored him.
-
The only problem is that he (Perez) hasn't found his best position / role yet.
-
I really think Townsend coming here would be great for both him and us. I appear to rate him more than most people on here but I do see a lot of potential with him.
-
From what you read about his attitude I think he would jump at the chance to go to Chelsea, then start complaining again once he doesn't play. Footballers rarely make the smart decisions like.
-
Also the fact that we haven't had any better options until last week.
-
Bring him in to replace Charnley.

Referee was looking straight at it so I don't think they could do anything anyway, even if it was deemed ban worthy (which it wasn't!).

Why would you even present that as an argument? Because it has more substance then 'I use my eyes'. And it shows in some respect that this supposed gulf between Lamela and Townsend just doesn't exist. Where did you get the figures from Mozy? Had a look earlier and found one site which stated 63 premiership appearances, 12 of which were for QPR; and 5 goals, 2 of which were for QPR. Just looked more widely and found another which stated 61 premiership appearances (49 for Spurs, 28 of which were as a sub) and only three goals (presume they are the Spurs premiership ones). Not sure which figures are accurate, but 21 starts for Spurs and 12 for QPR is hardly ripping up trees over three and half seasons (79 possible games). Wikipedia so not the most reliable source, but I was using total appearances & goals (including cup games).

And it shows in some respect that this supposed gulf between Lamela and Townsend just doesn't exist. No it doesn't, goals has never ever be an inclination of who is better than someone. Not to mention Lamela was s**** for Spurs for quite some time. He's finally settled though and showing the form why he was so hyped to begin with and he usually gets called up for Argentina which considering the talent they have is actually relevant. If you actually want me to explain here you go, he's better technically, he's a better passer, he's a better dribbler etc all in all he's just more talented across the board except for shooting and most of Townsend shots go in the crowd anyway. You obviously haven't seen enough of either to analyse their strengths and weaknesses properly so just pull stats out your arse. You say it yourself, Lamela was absolute shite when he first signed, not hard to improve on that. I don't agree with much of what you say, Townsend is a better dribbler and a better crosser. What I see of Lamela is someone who falls over in the wind, totally lacks any kind of end product and feasts on piss poor Europa League teams to pull out playground tricks. I've seen Lamela get shut down by Paul Dummett of all people. Not saying Townsend is any better, but he has the attributes to be moulded into a good winger. If he comes here and starts firing off no hope shots for fun then I'll accept I was wrong and he's just selfish.

That Hatem fella was proper turd, innit? and that Yohan bloke. We don't even need this bloke. We've got Thauvin who requires a run of games to prove 'he can be a quality winger' and we've Perez who can do a job out wide until we find someone who will have a much bigger, sustained impact, a bit like that foreign cunt at West Ham who was signed for 8 fucking million - 33% cheaper than this sprinter. Hatem and Cayabe don't offset Gouffran, Cabella, Thauvin, Anita etc. If there's another Hatem about then I certainly haven't seen him. Hatem was one in a million man, ridiculous hoping for anything other than the man himself. Thauvin cannot be relied upon and Perez isn't really a left winger. Payet is another number 10 so not someone we need. Anita does a better job than the 'english gritted' turd monkey next to him. Cabella was playing for Alan fucking Pardew and Gouffran cost about £3.86, I'm not sure we were expecting miracles from him. As for Thauvin not being relied upon...... How can you reach that judgement so quickly? Colback and Anita are both total shite. Cabella and Thauvin just haven't settled, Thauvin especially. I'm tired of people making excuses for players not playing up to their true ability. There comes a stage where the blame needs to shift to the players.

Erik Lamela 23 years old - 85 apps for Spurs 14 goals Townsend 24 years old - 86 apps for Spurs 10 goals Obviously goals isn't the only way to measure things, but Lamela is hardly Messi with those stats. And neither is Townsend.
-
Like others have said, I don't give two shits about the money as it's about time Fat Mike opened his fat wallet. I've seen Townsend have games where he cuts in and shoots all the time, but these were all from the right wing. If we want him to play there than that's a mistake. I've seen him when playing left wing where he doesn't cut in very much, and will look to cross more. It's where McClaren decides to use him. The point is that he's a young player, has experience of the league, wants to come and clearly has ability. It's like people see he hasn't been playing for Spurs and assume we've signed Gouffran's disabled brother.
-
Surely people don't rate Lamela significantly above Townsend.

Who do people realistically want instead? More unproven shite from abroad? Townsend has shown promise and been frozen out because Spurs won't accept that Lamela is a sunk cost. Give him a decent run and his has shown the raw attributes and consistency to be a quality winger.
-
He's s***. Besides Aarons name a winger in our team who is better than him, and then name an alternative suggestion who would fit under Ashley's budget ? Thauvin could easily be better if given a chance. I'm not sure why we should even assume he's any good, he's been as much a failure in this league over the past few seasons as Thauvin has this season. One half decent half season for QPR back in 2013 and we're supposed to assume he's automatically going to be better than what we have?, why? Much though I would like to have seen Thauvin more, and would like to think he could improve, I can't really blame McClaren for not playing him. When he's started he's generally given the ball away far too easily. Add to that that he clearly doesn't relish the pace of the English game and it's pretty hard to argue he should be persisted with. This.
-
Townsend is far better than Thauvin right now. That's what we need.
-
I would agree in most instances. But when Colback proves to be an absolute waste of a shirt on a weekly basis. I would advocate drastic changes. It could be a bit of a problem, starting two new centre midfielders. Which is why I don't think it will happen. But I wouldn't be against it. I'd agree that Colback and Shelvey in particular would be an absolute car crash waiting to happen, but I don't think it's something you can hold against McClaren too much. If Tiote is still lurking around by Saturday then I'd start him with Shelvey.
-
It's not like it's total madness to give new signings a couple of weeks to bed in in training and in sub cameos until they have the responsibiity of the team on them.

Jenas is a cracking pundit from what I've seen of him.

Aye he was quiet tonight. I'd say give him an extended run on the left now, let him get familiar with it.
