It was handball but the rule is just wrong, there was nothing unnatural in Rose’s arm position. Us humans have arms and they tend to flay about when we run and jump about. You can almost always tell when a player leaves an arm there to be hit.

I’m not sure how you are supposed to challenge for the ball if you’re risking be penalised for handball decisions like that. The ref was always going to award the penalty but what was Rose supposed to do with his arms? I agree with Jenas, accidental handball shouldn’t be punished.

He’s not the sharpest tool in the box, that’s not an excuse for crass jokes (we don’t know how he’s said these things). The club need to get staff on some courses as there’s no doubt that Beardsley’s whole career was littered with far worse comments and I’d imagine that his people skills aren’t the greatest.

He’s looking at the ball until the last moment so that he can try and get his body in the right position to block the ball, not just so he can get his arm in the way. As he then turns his arms are in the absolute natural position. It wasn’t a penalty imo but as soon as the ref was made aware of it by VAR officials it was always going to be given. I think the defender’s reaction was that he knew it had hit his arm and perhaps he felt he could have tried more to get his arm out of the way. Does that mean you have to do all possible to avoid contact with your arm (so they are no longer in a natural position) and not just have it in a natural position?
