The roller coaster of emotions associated with Steve McClaren are always going to be there due to the uncertainty surrounding people actually being content with his appointment. Me personally thought we were actually making progress but yesterdays performance was completely uninspiring and down right unacceptable. Today I watched Villa v Man City, and right away there seemed to be immediate signs of progression from Villa. They attacked with more purpose and players seemed to have a fantastic idea of what was required when the bull turned over (defensively). Until the club invest in a commanding centre half with the mindset to lead from the back, a equally commanding central midfield player (our midfield two, whether its Colback/Anita, Colback/Tiote, Anita/Tiote is horrendous and doesnt allow us to retain the ball consistently) then it doesnt matter who is manager we'll always see the same problems. Until that happens I am prepared to give him a chance, but at the same time its frustrating to see the lack of substantial progress in the teams development.

Stopped reading after that because that has to be a wind up. He works tirelessly for the cause. Thought there were more signs of progression today as their has been in the last three games albeit without getting a win. If we weren't creating chances and we weren't looking in control of game I'd be seriously worried. But I think step by step the team is progressing.

If Vieira doesn't in fact take the role like many of us expect he won't, for me the club have made a rod for their own back by releasing a "smoke-screen" story of this nature. I feel unless Garde (or someone "fresh" and forward thinking) takes the role, then whoever gets the job (McClaren) are on a hiding to nothing from the start. The club, whether they wanted too or not, have actually increased hope and expectation amongst many of us only to actual let us down when they hire ANOTHER patsy. The tension and pressure on the club could be even bigger if this doesn't go the route of Vieira or Garde et al.

I have an opinion as a newcastle fan for over 30yrs around who I would like to manage the club. I want the best and see the Mainz manager as a risk. I would rather see a manager with experience strong enough to aim for a cup run. Who do you suggest? the club have repeatedly said they are not interested in this therefore we 0% chance of this type of coach coming in. The best we can hope for is a coach who develops our players so we can finish 10th!!
