One thing these lists never take into account is the standard of the league in the 1990s. It wasn't good. England was ranked 7th in the coefficients in 1996 and even 1999 still only 6th. The European ban took a long time for English clubs to get over. This is why the likes of Cantona (and unfortunately our squad in that era) have to be looked through this spectrum IMO. Thats a player thats been with the club a decade, one of our most senior and symbolic characters, congratulating the opposing striker for banging one past him in a fucking derby. It's ludicrous.

I've always thought he was one of the few that could be pinned on as being committed to the club, a player who came through with us and felt like a long term figure despite his recent poor form the last season or so. I'd say they're quite comparable. I think Sterling does a good job in any attacking position whereas Coutinho isn't much cop outside of the #10 spot. He really struggled for Brazil the other day out wide.
