I think it was brought up around the time Rafa didn’t want to work how Carr operated and favoured a more statistical approach. We did have a database even in the days of Carr and we only have a small number of scouts to check the database recommendations. Before Rafa we were paying the cheapest fee (Western Europe only) but Rafa and Nickson were eventually able to encourage Charnley to approve more countries on the subscription. So how does that work? The club pays for a service to gain data on players? Actual Scout Data from real scouts presented in a FM style. Those who own the database software provide the scouts. They're probably just running a game of FM. I didn’t actually know that but now you’ve explained it it’s hard to imagine it’s done any other way ?

Surely not? Trying to stifle the excitement as it makes zero logical sense but that would really cap a fantastic window.

Great move for him. Us and Sheff United were the best options (before Wilson) for him as the forwards were absolutely terrible. He’s got to be thinking he’d be first choice in no time.

I still think he’s better in a holding type role or more specifically how Shelvey plays but he’s more mobile. I don’t think he’s got the clever passes or movement to be a 10. To use everyone’s cliche comparison he looked a lot like a young Carrick. Wolves away under Rafa seemed to be where he looked his best if my memory is correct. He looked really composed in that role and pressed well in Rafa’s system. I’m a bit worried he won’t cut it now though.

Given the replies to this and the responses Kaka has had for not absolutely slating the lad and saying he’s shite reminds me of Thauvin in almost every way. A young player new to the league asked to play in an unfamiliar position by a poor manager in system that didn’t suite him. I can’t remember a player that got more stick from the fan base at the time, a couple of years later he’s in the French team with all of their attacking options. I don’t think anyone in the right mind would try and suggest Joelinton has been anything other than terrible. I also don’t think you’re really stretching to suggest there’s a good player there somewhere, like Thauvin. Getting the best out of him and whether that’ll happen here seems increasingly unlikely though.
