93/94 was probably the best year for atmosphere I've experience. Apart from 92/93 the previous years the atmosphere was either toxic or non-existent most of the time. The alternative to not making it all season ticket was to have thousands of people queuing for tickets overnight (as with the scramble for away tickets) and thousands in the end queuing for nothing, people from outside the city at a massive disadvantage. The same people complaining about season ticket only would be complaining about that.

Italy aren't a good team. Has a good international team ever failed to qualify for two world cups in a row? The last decade has been the worst generation of Italian football in a century. Yes we won the Euro's, so did Denmark and Greece (also not good teams) largely thanks to there not being any particularly good teams in it. England should have been favourites tonight by every measure bar a massively inferior history. This is how it is with England though. Hype one way or the other, sometimes in successive games. Heroes when they beat teams they should beat and shit when they lose to teams they should lose to.

From when the atmosphere was good regularly it was the older ones (one behind me springs to mind, loved a moan) and the younger post Keegan one's that contributed the least to the atmosphere with the middle group 20-40 being the touch paper for things. Now they'll be the older ones and the younger ones will be the middle group. Overly simplistic reasoning as to why it is the way it is.

No. When were half decent and have bigger fish to fry they don't matter. They only come to prevelance when we've nothing else - which is how its always been and always will be to them, a perfect reason to be the opposite. Every game is a big game when you're trying to achieve things. Boro is basically Coventry/Sheffield Wed run of the mill game to us but a derby to them ergo we've nothing to win but its their biggest game.
