  1. Does sound like someone we’d pursue. Fits the profile we tend to go for.
  2. You can take the boy out of Gateshead… . Good on him anyway, it was most likely a justified smacking.
  3. Joining together @bobbydazzla’s Ceefax flashback and @Jonas’s view of the negative impact of a (otherwise top quality) new player, I remain one of the few with the view that buying Batty contributed to our downfall ‘that’ season. Changed the way we played, slowed down our devastating speed of attack. Regardless of it being an unpopular (and possibly dubious) opinion along with Anelka handling the ball in the build up to an Arsenal FA Cup final goal I’ll take it to my grave—like psychological big fat keloid trauma scar!

This evening’s inspiring factoid is that of the teams who played four games, only Italy (10), Slovenia (9) and Georgia (8) have had fewer than our 12 shots on target. Spain have had 29 and Germany 28. Switzerland have had 18. You’re welcome. https://www.uefa.com/euro2024/statistics/teams/attempts/
  5. Thought I’d add a BBC news reader to give your purportedly accurate historical summary more authenticity.
  6. I shall say there’s only once. Zee has ze l' audacité of a cheeky Robin de hooood.
  7. First games looming, could be an exciting three weeks transfer wise. Hoping we get our main business done in the next fortnight. Big signing w/c 15 July after Euro final.
  8. We need three for the bench in case we bet in the Champions League…
  9. Well we’ve, very predictably, had Bruno, Isak and Gordon scaremongering. That’s probably it for now. Hopefully the real stories get an airing now.
  10. Still don’t see it. Eales, much earlier, words of caution don’t provide evidence for this. I think our contingency plans will be multi layered and that kind of outgoing was, hopefully, one rung up from a never event.
  11. There is no evidence that selling Bruno or any of the ‘difference makers’ was ever in the club’s plans.
  12. The juice is definitely staying and young Alex deserves a chance 😉
  13. Don’t believe it personally. Great cover story for ‘having no money’ when buying our next worldie! 😉
  14. Don’t recall it like that, despite the evidence of people on here expressing negative views about him. He was still a teenager, and our player with the most potential, when he first went to Villa. Has been great since then and always looked like he would from my perspective (I was gutted when he was permanently transferred to them). That said, I do hope Anderson fulfills his potential and also has a great PL career.
  15. saving my rage/smirking until I know the details.

I am trying to recall if there’s ever been as consistent dissatisfaction with playing style, disagreement with selection and overlooking seemingly obvious gaps, in our Euros history. I can recall Robson and Taylor being slaughtered, at a number of points, and Keegan got a fair bit of stick about tactics. Eriksson and McLaren received a load of abuse though more personal than tactical if I recall correctly. Hodgson had a tough exit losing 1-2 to Iceland, with all goals in first 18 minutes but unable to turn it around. Here’s our record in last 12 Euros. 1980 (8 teams only) Ron Greenwood, group stage: Belgium (1-1), Italy (0-1 L), Spain (2-1 W). 1984, did not qualify (only 8 teams again) & 1988 (8 teams), group stage: Ireland (0-1), Netherlands (1-3), Soviet Union (1-3) Bobby Robson. 1992 (still only 8 teams), Graham Taylor, group stage: Denmark (0-0), France (0-0), Sweden (1-2). 1996 (16 teams)Terry Venables, semi final: group Switzerland (1-1), Scotland (2-0), Netherlands (4-1); QF Spain (0-0, 4-2 pens); Germany (1-1, 5-6 pens). 2000 (16 teams), Kevin Keegan, group stage: Portugal (2-3), Germany (1-0), Romania (2-3). 2004 (16 teams), Sven-Göran Eriksson, quarter final: group France (1-2), Switzerland (3-0), Croatia (4-2); QF Portugal (2-2, 5-6 pens). 2008 (16) Steve McLaren, did not qualify. 2012 (16 teams), quarter final: group France (1-1), Sweden (3-2), Ukraine (1-0), QF Italy (0-0, 2-4 pens). 2016 (24 teams), round of 16: group Russia (1-1), Wales (2-1), Slovakia (0-0); Round of 16, Iceland (1-2) Roy Hodgson. 2020 (24 teams), final: group Croatia (1-0), Scotland (0-0), Czech Republic (1-0); Round of 16, Germany (2-0); QF Ukraine (4-0); SF Denmark (2-1 AET); F Italy (1-1, 2-3 pens). 2024 (24 teams) quarter final (minimum): group Serbia (1-0), Denmark (1-1), Slovenia (0-0); Round of 16, Slovakia (2-1 AET); QF Switzerland (tbd)… . Gareth Southgate. Southgate has the best record (note 24 teams rather than 8 teams qualifying, and the impact of that on the opposition you face in the ‘finals’) but he might end up receiving more abuse than many and certainly more than he was on the receiving end of for his penalty miss in Euro 1996.
  17. Nice moment between Tripps and Dubz in the tunnel. Howay lads! (…not you Martin 😉)
  18. 22 and 17 full international appearances. There’s a player in there.
