When it comes down to the attributes of reflexes and shot stopping, Given is one of the best in the world.

His handling, positioning and agility are also good, but not world class, and he has a pretty good jump that compensates for his lack of height.

However, when it comes to communication, kicking, decision making, presense, throwing, one-on-ones, command of area and teamwork, Given is one of the worst in the league. And there are Conference players better at saving penalties.

Of these substandard attributes, Harper is certainly better at all bar kicking.

Fact is that Given is a Hollywood keeper with plenty of style and little substance, who in a prima donna fashion, seems more concerned about his individual performance rather than the performance of the team as a whole.

Such a keeper may have been helpful behind a shoddy defensive unit, but our unit has improved, and the importance of shot stopping ability diminishes when compared with other attributes, and he is thus no longer an indispensable player at the club.

so why has Given been hailed as one of the best keepers in the league for years and linked with the biggests clubs in the league while Harper has sat on the bench for 10 years?

Harper is one of the worst keepers at one on ones I have ever seen tbh.

You might ask WHO made these claims about Given, and in any case, there has been a shortage of really good keepers for a while - esp British ones(yes I know he's Irish).

Given is certainly not in the class of Shilton or Banks.

As for Harper on the bench, this has been a combination of managerial preference and Harper's own loyalty and patience.Maybe he prefers living in the Nprth East, and he is not badly-paid.

All our past managers rated Ameobi, but he has failed to live up to their rating AND failed to convince supporters that he deserves it, so does that mean they were automatically right about Given over Harper ?

All of them had to face the fact that they would struggle to get a decent replacement if Given left, but none of them put right the defence in front of either keeper - James has a good point about the defence being crucial to making a keeper look good(or bad)...

even subjective data can be used as statistics providing there is no mixing the subjective and the fact based.

my reason for asking was that the ratings in his sig have given as by far the best rated nufc player.

Hang on, so your trying to say that every manager that has been here, that had the choice between Shay and Harper chose Shay for what reason?! apart from that one litle spell under Guillit i believe.

Harper has just been in great form, no doubt, so for Big Sam to then go put Shay back in, doesnt that tell you something.

All this, and the fact that Harper is one of the most frustrating Keepers ive ever seen. There is no need for a kepper to take so long to distribute the ball when its 0-0 or 1-0 down!

Well its fairly simple. Shay was the form keeper in the team (and the league!). So he kept his spot.

This year its a bit confusing. Harper has clearly been the form keeper. And yet he lost his spot and we have a nervy Shay out there. So some of us are a bit confused. Confidence is probably about 1% importance to keepers when they have it and 90% when they don't. Shay doesn't have it at the moment and at times it looks like he doesn't want to be out there as a result.

this has to be one of the most misinformed things I've read on here in a long time.  The arrogance of it makes it a bit laughable aswell.

Seconded. That's also one of the reasons why very few top teams have interest on Given.

An own goal today. nice one!

is it an own goal or shay or alan smith?, the official website speaks of alan smith "accidentally" deflecting it in?, i didint see the game so someone please clarify!, also was the emre goal really that good?, id like to think that turkeys  return will spice things up rather than just a lucky goal that wont be followed by much!

iv always had great respect for given, and i always lose a bit of confidence when harper comes on. harpers  experience  doesnt compare to givens imo although it isnt his fault, and i still rate harper. but soon enough givens form will return.

id suspect that if SA leaves given out of the team, morale and confidence damage is much higher and that cant be good for the future. players need to know they will get their chances regularly and that they wont just be forgotten if they go through a spell of bad form.

Johnsons shot hit Smith & Given scored with his hands.

What did Harper do to get dropped? What can be worse for marally than playing well and being instantly dropped.
