I wondered about a festive Pogues remix.

"and the bells are ringing out for Habib Beye"

Chez, you definitely mentioned to me in the pub that you'd heard some Happy Days/Habib Beye going on.

Wullie, man, fix your avatar!

  • 5 months later...

Just noticed this on the beeb, Habib Beye has been dropped from the Senegal squad. I hope its because their resting him, would be madness to think he couldn't get into the squad on current form

He is on paternity leave, and he is also meant to have been carrying an injury for the past couple of months that now needs resting.

I’m here to stay: Beye

by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

HABIB BEYE gave the Toon Army some heartwarming news today when he revealed he was happy to commit his future to Newcastle United.

Beye lifted the Evening Chronicle’s player of the season award last week after 50% of the Toon fans who took part in our poll voted for him, finishing ahead of second-placed Nicky Butt by a considerable margin.

And with United yet to break the ice in the transfer market this summer, Beye’s vow to extend his stay on Tyneside beyond the remaining two years on his contract will be music to many fans’ ears.

The dependable overlapping full-back turned heads in the Premier League last season, despite some dark days for Newcastle, and he dovetailed perfectly into Kevin Keegan’s positive, attacking style of play.

United fans will be pleased to know that Beye was not selected to take part in Senegal’s hectic summer schedule in which they will pack in four World Cup qualifiers against Liberia (twice), Algeria and Gambia – all to be played in baking hot weather.

Beye will spend the summer recharging his batteries for a new season at United and he told the Chronicle: “Even after my contract is finished here, I’d like to stay beyond it.

“Playing for Marseille was a fantastic experience but Newcastle is a special club for me.

“We wanted to finish last season strongly and already we are looking forward to next year.”

The Former Marseille skipper may have won a place in the hearts of Geordies, but just like them he knows that 12th place will not be enough to satisfy them again next term.

And he admits he is much more used to life at the business end of the table.

He says: “I’m very happy to play for Newcastle.

“Sometimes you have some difficulties, but you learn all the time when you play football.

“This season has been different for me.

“When I played for Marseille, I played in the Champions League and this year we had to fight to keep Newcastle in the Premiership.

“But you learn all the time and I’m really enjoying playing for Newcastle. I want to stay and spend a long time here.”

Since Keegan’s return to Newcastle, the happy atmosphere at the club’s Benton HQ has been noticeable and Beye wants that feel-good factor to transfer to the stands next term.

He said: “All the people are very friendly. For me it has been a good season because I’ve played all the time.

“I think the manager is happy with my work and wants us to progress all the time.

“Playing for Newcastle is good and I want play well all the time.

“We have very good fans and we need to win a lot of games for them.”
