Eriksson wins his battle to sign £8m Newcastle striker Owen

Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson believes he has won the £8million battle to sign Newcastle striker Michael Owen.

Reports in the Daily Mirror say that Eriksson is confident of getting his man in the January transfer window after stepping up his attempts to sign the England striker within the last few days.

Owen, who will be 28 next Friday, has been plagued by injuries since joining Newcastle in a £16m deal 16 months ago.

He has made just 20 League starts and scored nine goals following his arrival from Real Madrid but Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce has been frustrated by Owen's injuries.

Eriksson has made it clear he is desperate to sign him for City and has remained a huge fan since managing him with England.

And not a quote in sight.

Want a quote? They're quite easy to come by when the man pulling the strings loves a bit of publicity. How about this:

"We're looking to see whether we'll do a swap deal or not. Adriano was a top player, but he lost form when his father died, and he put on weight. Now he's returning to form."

Thaksin Shinawatra.

Or how about this:

"Sven does like Peter Crouch, very much. But he has yet to decide (if he will make an offer),"

Same source.

:frantic:

If it does happen, not saying I would love it, but it could happen. Then I hope we have Anelka lined up as a replacement, would be a fantastic signing imo and it wouldn't be an impossible signing. And though he would cost a bit more we could actually end up making money if you include salaries.

Sell tbh. He doesn't fit in with how Sam wants us to play, and whenever he plays we look s****. Get the players to fit the system, rather than creating a system for the players.

Spot on.

Only players you should try and build a system around are truly world class ones, and Owen will never be at that level again.

Even if he was world class we couldn't build a team around a crock. £8m sounds good to me, same way the Real offer for Woodgate was way too good to turn down!
