The very definition of an 'at least we tried' attempt at a transfer.

What are you on about man?

We've put in various offers until we've finally got a fee agreed.  We've then agreed terms with the player and the only thing stopping it is complications on Lyons side and agents demands.  Unless you've re-written the definition of "at least we tried" than no its nowt like it at all.

As per usual we're not interested in buying players for their real value.

We love a bargain, but I'm not sure what that has to do with my post.

Also to be honest IMO £8m is above his value considering his contract situation, I never thought we'd offer that amount.

I would have thought that the sell on fee if it actually exists would 100% have to be paid by Lyon. They allowed St. Etienne to insert it into the contract when they bought him. As for Agents fees surely that is between Gomis and his agent (s) as he is the one with the contract with them. If he wants to come he could make an effort financially as well. Smoke and mirrors.

Tbf 8m is a very good fee and I can't blame our people if this collapses because of Aulas/agents being arses. What I have an issue is for 8m, we should have and already proceeded to a plan B (not Bent) by now. We drag this on and it eventually comes to this late stage in the transfer window that it's all-or-nothing. And we can't get similar for 8m?

I know Bent's our plan B. What I meant was that we should have gone for a striker similar to Gomis and what we need. 8m should get us a reasonable one, contract dispute/ending or otherwise.

You look at the lack of service to Cisse vs Braga and you think how Bent could exacerbate the problem, not solve it.

Although the creativity in midfield wasn't great V braga, there were times through balls were played and because of Shola's lack of pace he gave up. If that was a remy then he'd have reached it. Because of the limitations of someone like shola and his lack of movement, xavi would struggle to create in that team, the way they're set up.

Prob why he wants bent, though totally not the type of striker we need, at least his movement is good

With or without Shola, there's a problem with the lack of creativity in the midfield.

Too often, we seem to be trying to open up a defence with one pass. Other teams seem to be developing a style where the midfield and striker(s) are combining to open up defences with a series of short passes. It feels like we're getting left behind.

Yeh but other teams have movement upfront creating space. We have midfielders in cabaye and sissoko, marveaux, Ben arfa who can pick a pass but we are far too condensed in midfield and have poor movement upfront, apart from cisse. Those are creative players, signing another one wont make a difference if we play the same way and have limited movement up top

Exactly.. Gomis can at least work better in a 442 than Bent but neither will solve our lack of creativity through he middle or especially out wide.

Gomis could also provide an outlet, hold the ball up and also come deep and link play better than Cisse and far better than Bent.  That in itself could help us create by helping us keep possession and allowing our midfield to push up a bit (if Pardew allows it...).

Aulas and team gomis clearly hate each other.  He just making the remainder of gomis's stay at Lyon as uncomfortable as possible.  Be it only 3 weeks left of it.

Yep, keep Gomis in the transfer news to attract bidders. tbh he deserves Gomis' agent fee, he's done more work in trying to sort out the move than they have.

By the sounds of things he doesn't like us much either, so yes he's hoping someone else will bid with 5% on top.  And with the window closing nearer and nearer, teams/ bidders will get more desperate.

Yes they will but not as desperate as him imo. He's already acting it.

Well we have shown we are more than willing to wait for the next window or the one after for certain players regardless of how thin certain positions are.  We are clearly not as desperate as he is.

Apparently our offer was £8.6m (£7m plus £1.6m in addons).  So if he's waiting for another bidder to offer that plus 5% extra to pay St Etienne (£9m total) for a player who'll be able to sign a pre-contract for a free transfer in 6 months time then I think he's waiting in vein personally.
