the memory of Beardsley waving to the Kop in a black and white strip just before he moved there is something I won't ever forget.

Great player he may have been, and I don't blame him for leaving, but he's alwasy struck me as a bit gullible with his comments to the press etc, and I think he should have showed more support to his ex boss who has always looked after him.

Also as a Newcastle supporter and player, he knows why he left this club back in 1986 and he would do far more good if he turned around and said that its heading back to those s**** days and the sooner the club has an owner who understands it again the better.

Shocked and stunned someone agreeing with me while i get attacked from all sides and this is my point he plays safe every fucking interview sitting on the fence and it boils my piss,i know he is telling it as he sees it but for crying out load thats why i called this thread DELUDED FOOL but maybe it should have been Peter Beardsly backs Ashley YOUR THOUGHTS and see what replys i get and i bet they would be different to what i have received previously .

I think you are quite right but I wanted to see what others thought before I replied. Apart from the word "fool", I don;t like calling him that because he seems a nice bloke, but disloyal to his former boss and a bit of a yes man is more appropriate, in my opinion.

Surely, regardless of your views on Ashley and Beardsley, the first 2 lines from the 3 lines of Beardsley quotes in the OP are impossible for anyone to disagree with?

"He didn't come here to fail and he has put a lot of money into the club, so credit to him," said Beardsley.

"Unfortunately, it hasn't worked out but I'm a little bit disappointed he has to walk away."

Only Beardsleys comments in the final line could surely split opinion and they aren't exactly worthy of such an extreme response.

yes, and I agree with you, and also think that his ex boss who always looked after him deserved his support more than Ashley and also as a Newcastle supporter and player who also walked out on the club he could do a lot of good if he said he understands why his ex boss has walked out.

I don't know how many times we will need to re-affirm our views here.

Maybe Beardsley doesn't understand why Keegan walked out of the club again, why should he says he does if he doesnt?  Surely he's better off saying what he thinks rather than what you want him to say.

He didn't say he doesn't understand why Keegan left, he's just specifically quoted as talking about Ashley and what he has or hasn't done for the club.

I don't get why so many are questioning Beardsley's motives. He's only saying what many people on here are thinking. It's not an outlandish opinion.

He can't be doing it for personal gain, because Ashley is on his way out, and defending him won't be popular among the majority of fans.

The idea that he should be loyal to Keegan is also a bit strange to me. There are other people to be considered besides Keegan. I think it's quite important that someone in the public eye actually has the courage to give a more balanced view than the prevailing one.

Do you consider it a more balanced view because it happens to be in line with your opinion?

Bit like a dole waller thinking the mirror gives a balanced political view.

people are questioning his motives cos they dont agree with what he says. at the opposite end of the spectrum, people rubbished SBR and Shearer's opinions (and keegan's obviously) as they held a different opinion.

Beardsley backs besieged Ashley

Beardsley says Ashley deserves better from the Newcastle support

Newcastle legend Peter Beardsley has told Geordie fans to lay off under-fire owner Mike Ashley and thank him for reducing the club's debts.

Ashley put Newcastle up for sale this week when protests revealed the extent of his unpopularity.

But Beardsley, who enjoyed two great spells as a Newcastle player, believes Ashley has been harshly treated.

[glow=red,2,300]"He didn't come here to fail and he has put a lot of money into the club, so credit to him," said Beardsley. [/glow]

"Unfortunately, it hasn't worked out but I'm a little bit disappointed he has to walk away.

[glow=red,2,300]"His heart was in the right place. Maybe he didn't always show it in the right way but I think he really cared about Newcastle."[/glow]

A successful businessman in the sportswear sector, Ashley has found sporting success harder to come by.

Ashley might be at the club a while yet - he should be allowed to watch the games

Peter Beardsley

The 45-year-old completed his purchase of the Tyneside outfit in July 2007 and has invested almost £250m of his estimated £1.4bn fortune in the club.

A large chunk of that has gone on reducing Newcastle's previously alarming debts, although he has also made considerable sums available for transfers and wages.

Forced by supporter unrest to sack Sam Allardyce as manager in January, Ashley appeared to have secured some breathing space when he handed the reins to fans' favourite Kevin Keegan.

But results on the pitch did not improve drastically and off-field tensions between the manager and the continental-style structure Ashley put in place around him to handle transfers and scouting led to Keegan's resignation earlier this month.

Fans did not take long in deciding who to blame and Ashley, who was born in Buckinghamshire and lives in Hertfordshire, became a target for growing dissent.

Matters came to head last Saturday when a depressing home defeat to Hull City was almost a sideshow to vociferous protests against Ashley, executive director Dennis Wise and the rest of the board.

The following day, the supporters got their wish when Ashley, who has been a regular at St James' in his replica shirt, issued an emotional press release stating his intention to sell.

606: DEBATE

If he'd have come out with something like this sooner it may never have come to what it has

Mirandinha

"I am not stupid and have listened to the fans," the entrepreneur said.

"I am now a dad who can't take his kids to a football game on a Saturday because I am advised we would be assaulted.

"Therefore, I am no longer prepared to subsidise Newcastle United.

"I am putting the club up for sale. I hope the fans get what they want and the next owner is someone who can lavish the amount of money on the club the fans want."

But Beardsley, who received a Football Foundation award on Thursday for his community work for Newcastle, regrets the manner of Ashley's departure.

"Ashley is trying to do the right thing," said the 47-year-old.

"He's always tried to do the right thing, but it's hard, because Newcastle is Newcastle and unless you're used to that part of the world it does take a bit of getting used to.

Keegan's exit was the final straw for many Newcastle fans

"I feel a sorry for him. But he'll sort it out and hopefully everybody will be happy with the conclusion."

The former England star said he understood why the fans were upset with the situation and praised their support for the club.

"We have a passion that probably isn't equalled anywhere," he said.

"If you look at the lack of success - and that's not Mike's fault - the support is unbelievable. They've been there through thin and thin.

"I don't think the fans are the problem - they care. They used their power and Mike has decided to walk away. But I think that's a shame, I really do."

Any sale of the club, however, is dependant on Ashley finding a buyer, and that might take some time.

With an asking price in excess of £480m, Ashley does not give the impression of a man looking for a quick sale and a trip to Dubai this week interested the British media more than any potential buyer.

"Ashley might be at the club a while yet," admitted Beardsley.

[glow=red,2,300]"And if he is he should be allowed to watch the games. It's his club and he has spent a huge amount trying to make us a force, first by clearing debts and then for transfers. [/glow]

"It might not even be too later for Mike. If he brings success as an owner the fans could still forgive him. Geordies are like that."

[glow=red,2,300][/glow]

These are the reasons for my annoyance .

1.Bleeding obvious he didnt come here to fail and to putting money into the club i would like to see it spent on quality players not balancing the books .

2.Bleeding obvious his hearts in the right place but "maybe he didnt show it in the right way " what the fuck does that mean at least tell us please Peter.

3."Spent a huge amount of money making us a force ,first by clearing debts and then for transfers " well Peter we had no activity in the first transfer window and the second was a selling spree with one £10 million plus and a few undisclosed .

It is the general lack of knowledge on the subject that bugs me and maybe it was a waste of time him being interviewed

of course.

Even we know why Keegan left, because he told us. If Beardsley doesn't, where has he been the last 2 weeks ?

I stand by my comments. His ex boss is far more worthy of his support than Ashley, and as  a Newcastle supporter he would do a lot more good by telling it like it is. Keegan has buggered off because the club wouldn't back him as the manager, and appears to be sliding back to where it was in the 1980's and he of all people should know this, as he walked away himself from the same situation.

I posted about this article in another thread, I said I thought the author wrote it from a pretty Ashley apologetic point of view, and Beardsley quotes although nothing too offensive smack of self interest in staying close to the ownership in the hope he can get a job.

what i say is true melanie, and has been in this thread and others, all the way down the line.

If you wish to ignore it and form a different non-factual based "opinion", then of course, thats up to you.

Edit. It wasn't meant to be patronising to the younger lads like yourself. I don;t get this. Plenty of people have said to me over the years that George Eastham and Len White were brilliant players, and better than <insert name>. I didn't see them so I can't dispute it. Likewise when people tell me how shite the board were when Eastham took the club to court and started the abolishment of the maximum wage process, you have to take it on board. Its not patronising, its in the record books.

So everything you say is fact? Out of interest.

I edited the post.

Some things are facts and some are opinions. My opinions are factually based though. Give me some examples that you want me to comment on ?
