themanupstairs
Newcastle are trying to offload flop Damien Duff to bring in Derby star Kris Commons. Republic of Ireland winger Duff, 29, has been an expensive disaster at St James' Park since a £5million move from Chelsea in July 2006. And Toon boss Joe Kinnear is under pressure to get Duff off United's crippling wagebill. Former Nottingham Forest chief Kinnear, who took Commons to the City Ground in July 2004, wants to be reunited with the left-sided Scottish international. But Wigan boss Steve Bruce is also a big admirer of £3-mrated Commons and is ready to swoop as he looks to spend his transfer windfall following the sales of Emile Heskey and Wilson Palacios. Bruce and assistant Eric Black have been to watch Commons in the past week and are keen to do a deal. Bruce has failed to land Reading's Stephen Hunt and Cardiff's Joe Ledley, citing 'crazy prices' as he bids to bolster his squad. However, Commons is more affordable as Derby try to balance the books after a bad year and Wigan are poised to make an offer in the next 48 hours. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2009/01/30/newcastle-and-wigan-battle-for-derby-star-kris-commons-115875-21081959/ Been crying out for us to bring this lad in for donkeys now. Can't believe he's stayed down there so long. Class act imo. One of those who will make the step up no problem.
Mowen
Commons is nothing special. Saw him a couple of times for forest, got a decent shot on him, not particularly quick, no great quality. Probably marginally better than Duff.

Beezeri
Commons moved to Derby for nowt in the summer, us paying £3 million in Jan is seems bang on. That's not even close to Duff's yearly wage(around £4,5 millions) and even if Commons is just marginally better he would be on like 5 times lower wage so a brilliant piece of business IMO... steve_69
Did Commons and Kinnear work together at Forest? This can be an advantage Depends if Commons liked him or not. If, like a lot of our players, Commons thought Kinnear was a tool then it probably wouldn't work in our favour

ToonTastic
staggering there's been no link to a left back huh? Thats been my biggest concern. I'm glad we're getting in a midfielder and one who already plys his trade in the Premiership and won't demand stupid wages. I'm glad we're going for a right back so Taylor doesn't have to play, and we seem to be trying to get another midfielder which will help. But without a left back I'm worried. Unless of course JK has plans to shift our defence about a bit when he has choice and player Taylor in the center of defence and move Bassong back out to left back. Beezeri
Can we transfer a new manager in as well? Sure we can and for once we don't need to pay the former a fortune to get rid of him because he's not on a long term contract as it was the case with like last 4 managers and 6 of last 8 since beginning of the Premier League. Guest MrSundlofer
Finally something is happening. This could turn out really good after all. With Kevin Nolan and Ryan Taylor in the team we will have a more balanced midfield. Nolan always full of determination and bravery. Taylor a free kick specialist. Both also work hard on the pitch. Would be great if we could sign them both. Given to Man City. Get a swap in that deal. Pay £3M for Ebondo. Either Shorey + cash for Zoggy or straight swap: Bent - Zoggy. Get Saviola in on loan. Some options for us to do. I will be happy if one or two of the deals will be agreed. If we want players in. Today is the day.
